I've had it with this cpap machine...

Recommended Posts

This is the start of my 4th week trying to sleep with a cpap machine because of the results from my sleep study.

I *still* have not been able to get a decent night's sleep with it. I'm tired all the time, falling asleep at work, and I travel a lot... there's been a few times I've had to actually pull off at a rest stop and take a nap in my car out of fear of me falling asleep and crashing.

In those 4 weeks, I've sleep (not counting naps) twice WITHOUT it, and they were great nights! I've *never* had an problem sleeping or feeling rested UNTIL I started using this blasted machine.

I'm sooooooo done.

So what do I do now? Do I just take it back and say no thanks? How will that effect my VSG surgery? Do I push to try and get apnea surgery (I still have my tonsils, I imagine that's probably the problem.).. do I push for that now to recover in time for VSG?

I would just lie about it and just tell them I've been using it, but the damn thing tracks my breaths to a little computer chip... ><

PLEASE HELP!

No one ever checked on me to see if I was actually using the machine. I was diagnosed as needing the machine - got it - and put it on the floor of my closet. Shortly after surgery, when the first 30 or so pounds were gone, my husband said I was sleeping like a baby and had no more signs of apnea. Ask your surgeon what he would reccomend you do.

you're SO lucky.. I had to call in how many hours I used it at 7 days, and will have to report in ever 30 days after that... ><

which surgeon should I talk to? the VSG one? or an apnea one?

I am in the same boat. I thought that i was going to have surgery sometime in may 2011 but it never happen. I was waiting for the Pulmo. Doctor to clear me. She sent me for a sleep study mind u I never complain about having trouble sleeping, but i was found to have sleep apnea. I was place on the CPAP machine and it has been horrible. I dont feel rested, I take naps now and I find that at night I pull the mask off in my sleep.

And you are right that damn chip does not allow you to cheat. All so becareful because some insurances want that information to see if you are really using it. If you are not using the machine they will ask for it back. I went from a nose mask to full mask becasue I breathe through my mouth and with all these changes I still can't get use to the machine. So now after 4 month I still have trouble with the machine but the doctor has approved me for the WLS. Looking to have surgery late Jan. or early Feb 2012. Because I did not meet the insurance deadline so I have to start again with the small stuff but already have all the doctors's approval. I wear it every night and by 4:30 to 6:00am I take it off and get some sleep with out it. I feel much better doing that, but I use it every night. I don't have my tonsils

So if you really want this you have to be willing to jumps thru these crazy hoops. If you want look at my old post on pre-op location about My pre-op hell.

Hang on in there things are going to fall into place.

Call the Pulmo doctor which is the doctor for apnea and he/she can help with the problem maybe you need to change your mask.

Stick with it you may not need it after the surgery.

I tried cpap 10 years ago, and then again last year. I never could adapt to any of the masks. I turn over when I sleep and always had to adjust the hose, the mask etc., whenever I did. I gave up. It was disappointing, because I did really like the feeling of increased air flow into my nose. Best of luck to you.

That's exactly how I sleep... I like to alternate laying on one side, then the other.. I don't wake up, it's just how I sleep... and that's the *exact* same problem I have! always having to move the tube / adjust the mask, etc.. as I roll.

So I called the sleep lab, and they're going to give me medicine to keep me awake during the day... It's not that I'm ungrateful, as that's my biggest complaint.. but.. I dunno... it just seems like the "cure" they've given me is the problem, and now I'm taking drugs to save me from the effects of their cure... ><

I felt *TOTALLY* fine before all this crap. *sigh*

Funny, I've been using a CPAP machine for 2 years now and I can't sleep without it. Oh and I roll from side to side too.

it is true that if you sleep funny it make it harder to use the machine. As long you are telling the pulmo doctor about it. they can help. My doctor said that alot of people have trouble with the machine. Because of the chip she sees I am trying what ever happen at night with the mask is what it is according to her. ;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
