Hi everyone. I just got sleeved Monday and I am discouraged. I know I am only two days out but I got on the scale to start my journal for after surgery and I gained 4.5 lbs in one day on nothing but fluids! I sure could never lose that fast! Then other problem is I feel hungry. Is that "normal" amd did anyone else have that and get down (grieve over the loss of food)? I knew this was coming. I did well ( didn't feel hunger) and lost 21 lbs before surgery, which was hard due to Mr Ghrelin hanging out in the stomach. I think now he has taken up permanent residence in the 15% that is left and he is on a rampage. At home I am now allowed Protein Shakes, yogurt, and pureed fruit, along with liquids from before. But head and sleeve hunger is there. I :( Would appreciate any of your help. Thanks, Monty

The weight gain from the IV fluids is normal, anywhere from 3 to 7 lbs. The good news is it comes off very quickly as long as you keep your fluids up. You'll be pleasantly surprised when you step on the scale one week out. Hang in there:)

I was also sleeved on Monday. I gained 15 lbs on the fluids. I have not been on the scale since that first day home. I am feeling nauseated sometimes. I only dare to drink Water. Only drank about 8 oz yesterday. Trying for a lot more today.

Both the weight gain and the hunger are normal. Like the other said, the extra weight will come off quickly and once your new stomach heals a bit the hunger will disappear. I'm only 16 days post-op, and for me it took 2 full weeks for my hunger to go away.

Hang in there and be encouraged. Things will come together in time.

All the best,

Niki

K, Monty, you know I can't give advice, because I haven't had my surgery left, but I am cracking up over the ghrelin taking up permanent residence and going on a rampage comment....that was hilarious!!

I also was sleeved on Monday. I haven't weighed yet because I can't find the scales (and am now glad of that).

I feel the 'altered state' of my gut and can't yet call it hunger. Good luck Monty - I will try the the pureed fruit and yoghurt as a meal. Probably not enough Protein in that though ... is there?

Congratulations! You need to get some Protein powder or shakes to boost your Protein. Apparently you need to hang around 70-75, because it speeds up your metabolism and helps you lose faster.

I also made some homemade chicken broth (receipe on this site) and my new tummy really liked it. Canned and carton tasted too salty to me. Hope this helps. Monty

How are you doing? Feeling better? I think as I get better at keeping my sugar levels up, it helps my mood also.

Are you still as down as before?

Thanks for asking. Haven't been here in awhile. I am still down as the shakes are becoming tiresome already. You were sleeved on the same day as I recall. What is your diet right now? Am I misreading your ticker or have you already lost 17 lbs? When is your next Dr. visit and when do you move on to the next stage. What will you be allowed to have? Just curious if the Drs. in Austraila do it the same. It's nice to have someone :) to chat with that is in the same boat and about the same time. Monty

Yes.. we were sleeved on the same day.

I think the reason for the 17lb was that I was allowed nil by mouth days 1 and 2, then ice only day 3 clear liquid day 4 and vitamised Soup day 5. Now, if I can vitamise it enough that I can get it through a straw, it's mine! For me it is beef, lamb, chicken, mash potatoes etc etc unless I feel that I haven't had enough Protein. Then I will have a shake. My next Dr visit is 24th Oct. Up until then I plan to gradually take my foot off the pedal of the vitamiser but I am sure the stuff I am eating still wont be recognisable except by smell.

I next plan to weigh in next Mon (Sun afternoon your time) will post it then - I am hoping for another 5-6 lb (2-3kg).

I am eating a tiny amount of food though - perhaps 2-3 oz at a time. Some yoghurt in between also.

Good luck- let me know how you're going please.

My next Dr appmt is 10-20. I like your diet better :D I am not doing so well on my exercise. Just can't seem to get that off the ground. I did a walking tape for 10 min yesterday and bought a pedometer and have started counting steps. There is a great site called MY FITNESSBUDDY.COM that helps me keep track of myprotein, fluids etc. I fill that in and track my progress. I am still dealing with hunger and except for the incisions would wonder if they even did it. If you are eating 2-3oz at a time you must have to eat more frequently that 3-4 times a day. Maybe that is the key. Please keep me posted how you are doing and I will do the same. Thanks for your response. I look forward to connecting with others in the same boat on here :)

I NEVER lost my hunger sensation. I still feel hungry and guess I always will. I find that it is ALOT more managable now tho. I can wait to eat and it is not that "FEED ME NOW" type hunger I use to get pre-sleeve. I wish I didn't get hungry, but I do and I deal with it.

I also gained 14lbs during surgery, but it came right off in a couple days. Yours will too!

Kelly :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
