How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

I have lost most of my weight by sheer willpower. The only lbs I can really say the band did it was when I was too tight and couldn't eat. I lost 8 lbs in a week. I couldn't handle being that tight and throwing up every time I ate solid food and got what was supposed to be a slight unfill. Now I can eat anything I want again.

I am really tired of getting fills and trying to find the sweet spot, so I am trying to just make good food choices. I didn't do very well today though.

Hi everyone, I had my consultation visit with Dr. Wellborn. My surgery date is Nov. 30. I already have appointments to get my first fill at 6 weeks. I can't hardly wait to get started. I am inspired by many of the post but I think Indigo Girl inspires me the most. Thanks Indigo. I hope I can do as well as you have. Whatever you do, never quit posting. You are very inspiring. Brenda

Brenda, you are too kind :D I just tell it like it is - I feel that we all have so many common issues - we are fat girls - we think like fat girls and we have the insecurities of fat girl - But we are on our way to a truely life style change and not just a diet. Diets don't work - it really is all about a lifestyle change and dealing with our food issues - the band really is a great tool to help in changing our habit.. Maybe it cuz we have choosen such a drastic soultion to our weight issues that I find it so very motivating.

Congrats on your surgery date 11/30 :clap2: - I will keep you in my prayers on that day. Please know that for the first few days you won't feel your best but that every day it does get better by day 3 you should be feeling pretty good. Make sure you get the gasx strips - walk and drink your fluids..

Denise you are doing so friggin great :clap2:- 15 lbs to goal - :clap2:I think you are way too hard on yourself... I think the band is just that tool we all need to help us make those good choices - and some days we don't - but for the most part we do and that's how you have gotten so close to your goal - Keep up the GREAT work... You are an inspiration...

Aw shucks. Thanks for saying that. I have been fighting the same 2 or 3 lbs for the past two months. I can't seem to get below 160.

I don't want to get another fill though, because I hate it so much when food gets stuck. Since I still get food stuck, that tells me I am tight enough. I wish chocolate would get stuck and make me pb every time. There's nothing like aversion therapy. I got so sick when I tried to eat a piece of pizza, I don't think I'll ever try it again.

To be within 15 pounds of goal would like a piece of heaven. Do you excersize? Perhaps if you increased your workout or begin a workout (if you don't excersize). It sounds like you are stuck in that starvation mode where the body decreases your metabolism. The body does this because it is still back in the stone age, feast or famine. Excersize is one way to boost the metabolism.

Hi All, anyone know anything about this. I was banded on 9/11/07. In late Oct. I got blood tests. It turns out that my bad cholesterol shot up from normal to 189 (very high) also triglacydes up. My creatinine is real high and my BUN is up (both are signs that my kidneys aren't cleaning my blood very well. Also my blood pressure is much lower than it should be. Went back today for more tests. My PCP seemed to imply that the lap band surgery may be part of this???? Maybe just misread him. A year ago my blood work showed me to have and ideal LDL/HDL triglacydes were low. No kidney problems.

This has me bitting my nails from worry. Anyone know anything about the surgery and the problems I have?????????????

NM, I've experienced just the opposite. I'm now off my cholesterol meds and half of my BP meds and the glucophage (controls sugar) as well. In fact, the reason I had the surgery done in the first place was to get my cholesterol, BP, and sugars straightened out. I think I'd contact my surgeon and talk to him about it. Never hurts to hear a 2nd opinion!

Too, (and this is probably an outside chance), but could your doctor be looking at old records, or even...someone else's? The reason I ask is my doctor was fussing at me one day about this and that had gone up and then she realized the tech had put my husband's results in my folder!

Good luck. I wouldn't wait on calling the surgeon. They may want to look at the blood results as well.

I agree with Crabcake - Don't think it is cuz of your lapband... Maybe your diet - what are you eating.

Crabcake & Indigo Girl

The doc redid the blood tests yesterday in case a mistake was made and I'm doing a 24 hour urine collection. Those should reveal if a mistake was made.

I had high blood pressure, it has dropped so doc removed some of the blood pressure meds. The blood pressure continues to drop ( about 90/60). I'm now weanning of my main med. We'll see what happens.

Crabcake,

That is one of the main reasons I got banded. To get me off these meds and to avoid diabetes and such.

When my doc weened me off my HBP meds, she told me if my bp dropped below 110, to discontinue taking another med. Are you still on bp meds? 'Cause I wouldn't be taking them right now if I were you (I'm sure your dr. told you this already, I'm just stating the obvious!).

Labs *do* make mistakes, so hopefully that's what has happened w/ you. (Aren't those 24 hour urine test fun? Wait till you have to take that jug of 'T' into the doctor's office! :))

Gross 'T' in that I have to keep in in the refrigerator!! Yea, I can just see my embarrasment of hauling that giant jug in. At least it is orange plastic and not clear plastic!

I'm on 3 BP meds. One was cut in half some weeks ago. Now I am to go off the second med by halving the pill for a week, then take it 1 day on and 1 day off for the second week. Then elimate it.

In the past when I went off one of the meds (because I was out of pills) my BP jumped to 200/105. It's a reaction I have to sudden stops.

Ice 'T'! Ugh! You're lucky...the bottle was clear when I did it and wouldn't you know, I saw some man I know from work sitting in the waiting room! I ran right past ('T' was in a brown paper bag of course!!!) and left it on the counter in the lab. (My name was on the bag.) I passed the Tech on my way out and told her I'd left a 'little something'! :)

Wow, you be careful w/ those bp meds and keep us posted on your blood work. I'd be interested to hear what the results are.

Didn't think about the brown paper bag...will use one. Can't imagine what that man from work thought was in that brown paper bag!!

Yes, I'll keep you posted on the BP meds. I'm taking my BP 3 times a day now.

Thanks for the concern and information.....gotta go fill my 'T'.

If any of your colleagues decides to help themselves to your "T" they are going to get quite a surprise! :) :faint:

I was lucky enough to do mine on a Sunday and drop it off Monday morning for that very reason! The nurse asked me 'do you work?' and when I told her yes, she said 'well, you'd hate for the boss to get into this!'

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
