Hi fellow sleevers!

I have been sleeved 2 weeks now and on mushies now for a week. I have noticed that after every meal I know im done when basically the food is sitting in my throat. I am trying to slow it down, but, I know I eat kinda quick. I hear some people say they under eat their sleeves, but, I dont get a whole lot in as it is and what I can eat I want to eat. I still have to get it out of my head to eat all the food on my plate, even if it is small portions, but, am I over eating? Am I gonna mess everything up so quick? I feel like I just cant get the hang of this.

Also, the little amout I can eat now, on the mushie stage, is that the portion size forever? Because I hear people eating a variety of stuff at meals, but, I cant imagine how! I want to though!!! Maybe i'm having that moment after surgery were I am wondering how I am going to do this for the rest of my life. I hear it gets better, but, will i be able to eat alittle more than I can now? Granted im not hungry, but, I do miss food. even being on medifast since June, then to this, I feel deprived. My mom keeps telling me I could have lost the weight without the surgery because I am the strongest in the family and I have great will power, but, Its not true....anymore. I lost 100 lbs when I was 21 doing low carb diet and exercise. I had no child, no disabled husband and alot less stress. If I was so strong I wouldnt have gotten to be morbidly obese! I need this tool to get healthy! Sorry for venting guys, i just need to talk to others that understand and can offer advice! thanks!

My portion size right now is 2 oz per meal, 3 times a day. I am religiously measuring everything because my "eyeball" measuring is terrible (as evidenced from all my weight watchers failures!!!). My plan calls for me to increase to 3 ounces at 3 months, and go up from there . . . I think by 6 months I'm at 5 or 6 ounces. My nutritionist recommended I try to take a half hour to eat. That is REALLY hard, I was a very fast eater prior to surgery. I try to take a bite and put the food or my fork/spoon down between bites. I've also been surfing the 'net or reading a book while I eat so I'm not focusing on it completely.

I don't know how far out you are but I am on soft food at 3 weeks and my instructions say 4 tbsp or 1/4 cup max. I can do about 2 tbsp.

Please be careful not to get too full! My greatest fear Is jeporadizing my suture line and getting a leak. ( I met girl in my support group that did) or getting mega esophagus.

Hi I'm one week out and started mushie food today...and I didn't measure it???? But o only hot 3 spoonfuls in.so I will start so I know how much it is and I to feel like it was to much??? I just say to my self is look in my book and ask ? Good luck cause I know I need it to...

i could barely do 4 ounces for a long time now i can do 4 oz of anything really but if i go above that it comes right back up as u go u will learn if u have "one bite too much" before u swallow it. i am almost 2 months out now and feel perfect u will g et there too :D

In case your food plan doesn't include this information, 2 tablespoons = 1 ounce. My nutritionist stressed that food should be measured this way and not weighed, because some foods might weigh lighter so 1 ounce of weight might be too much volume overall.

Hi Emma's mom, I'm glad you are being conscious about this at such an early stage. It will give you a head start in modifying your behavior.

First, your sleeve will be able to handle more food little by little as the weeks/months go by. My progression was 1/4 cup, then 1/3 cup, then 1/2 cup, etc. I am about 3 months out and I can eat about 3/4 cup. When I get close to a cup or so, that is overstuffing myself and yes I get that food in the throat feeling...not good! (btw my guidebook from the dr says in the long run our sleeve should be able to hold 1 to 1-1/2 cup of food MAX) Also, how much you can eat depends on the density of the food.

So when you move onto solids, my advice is to learn to chew thoroughly. At least try that as your first step. It will slow your eating down, and if you do feel food in your throat at least it won't be chunky...ouch! (sorry if this sounds gross)

This is what I am struggling with now. I have not ever thrown up, but I have come close to wanting to. It is a battle for me; I used to wolf down huge amounts of food but those days are over.

me too, i thought i was the only one i just started my 4 weeks and it also says 2 oz of mash potatoes, and 4 oz of meat for some reason and is soft solids, i thought it was too much but i still eat when i remember. good luck

You may not be eating too much but just too fast. I found that I had a really hard time eating slowly enough. Then I got a 2 minute hourglass egg timer and when I take a bite, I turn it over. Then I just enjoy my bite and when it's gone...I wait until the sand empties out before I take another bite. This has worked WONDERS for me in not eating too fast. I found mine at a game store but you can get them on the internet. Most egg timers are 3 minute ones. I didn't think I needed to wait that long between bites.

In the begining I couldn't gage when to stop and had that feeling, just be mindful of when you START to feel full, you will figure it all out, just takes time, and be careful if you do eat too much, you will throw it back up, happened to me with watermellon, wasn't thinking and just kept eating it and my new tummy said DONE! LOL and I was. Never did that again :)

I know most physicians say to never eat in front of the computer or TV but in our case I do think it helps. My Nutritionist als said that every bite should be chewed 30-35 times. She also said to eat until your "satisfied" rather than "full". Practice makes perfect I guess :)

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
