Am I mentally prepared?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have a surgery date of July 27TH. Since I am a self pay (big bummer, my insurance still considers this surgery "experimental" ): I did not have to do a 6 or 3 month diet (which I can see the benefits of) and I am wondering if I will be mentally prepared for surgery and all that it entails. Do you have any suggestions ? Is there any reasons I should seek counseling of any sorts?

My Dr. does not require any type of diet before surgery, so I am starting protien shakes to replace 2 meals a day now to help with the transition before surgery and to also help with weight loss/fatty liver.

Thanks for any advice, I appreciate each of you!

Tracy

I didn't do a supervised diet before my surgery. I too, was self pay because my insurance denied my claim. I can't honestly tell if a 3 or 6 month supervise diet would help mentally. Anyone who is obese have some sort of eating issue but you know if your relationship with food is serious enough to get help. Before the surgery I did a lot of reading about people's experiences after their surgery and what cause some people to fail their weight loss surgery to see if I was at risk also. It would never hurt to talk to a counselor before the surgery just as a precaution.

I agree with Mina, I had my surgery 8 months ago and I'm still learning new things about how and why I ate the way I did. I think it is good to get some counseling dealing with food issues if your an emotional eater. With that said the therapist I had to see before my surgery did nothing to help me but make sure I was okay mentally. Good luck on your journey!

I got to twelve steps meetings for support for substance abuse, but have found that it helps for my feelings toward food too. The fact of the matter is, for me it sounded like a good idea for someone to cut out a good portion of my stomach so that I can not each as much food as I want anymore. Therefore I must have a problem with food. I think that counseling will help you get through this journey.

I think it may help. I think you really just have to know that your old crutch of food is going to be unavailable. That means for me that I have had to find a way to feel my emotions and deal with them in a healthy, productive way. If you think it would help to talk to someone...go for it. I'm doing all kinds of things to help me get to a better place of self love. From journaling to reading to exercise to goal setting and vision casting....and a ton of talking to people in my support system. I am also self pay and only did a 2 wk preop diet...and I was way ready to do this mentally. But it is still an emotional roller coaster, so whatever you decide plan some coping strategies for after your surgery as well as establish your suppo

Hello Tracy, we can be sleeve sisters, I am getting my sleeve July 27th also. I eat mostly from boredom and I simply enjoy eating. I am going to do a 3 week liquid Protein diet pre-op. I have not had counseling, and I am self pay in Mexico, so didn't have to have a psych eval.

I wish you luck on your wls journey as well as your journey of self discovery.

I do have to do the 6 months for my insurance. I am really impatient but at the same time, there is so much more to it than the "diet" - I have met with a physical therapist to talk about exercise routines before and after, social worker to talk about any issues in general, nutritionist to talk about changing habits before surgery and several nutrition classes. That is above and beyond meeting with my primary Dr each month just as a check in on my weight and weight loss. I can't wait but am thankful at the same time that there is so much learning involved!!

My insurance company requires a 3 month pre-surgical weight loss diet and exercise program. Now that I'm almost halfway through it I'm appreciating the work. I chose Medifast, which pretty much mimics what I'll be able to eat after surgery and the exercise (which I was already doing) just gets me pumped up for the upcoming weight loss that I look forward to post-op. I am supposed to go to two Bariatric Surgery support groups pre-op per my surgeon and now that I've been to one I'd like to continue going after surgery for the support. I also see a therapist every other week and have no desire to stop at any point. She's helping me a great deal with preparing for the upcoming changes. I say that it couldn't hurt you to make some small changes now to mentally prepare yourself.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
