I experienced my first extremely painful ordeal yesterday. I had a piece of chicken, but I believe I may have eaten it a bit fast, and I drank something right after.

I started getting the worse cramps ever!! I vomitted a bit, and just had to wait it out for the cramps to stop. I was completely exhausted after the whole episode.

Sooooo obviously at this point I should stay away from the chicken.

But what do you eat to keep things interesting in the third week? I'm completely over the drinks, and the Soup, etc. I started eating mashed potato and egg which is great, but I need some other ideas to get through this.I feel like i'm going out of my mind, and I feel like this is the only thing I think of.

I am 4 weeks out today and chicken is really hard for me. I know that everyone's sleeve reacts differently, but chicken can tend to be dry and that makes it really hard to eat. Deli meat is the easiest meat for me. I love taking the garden vegetable cream cheese and spreading it on some deli meat and eating it rolled up. Super yummy. Shrimp and scallops are easy to settle also.

Really, you just have to find what works best for you. Take it one bite at a time and slowly. Stick to what your Nut recommends and you'll do fine. Unfortunately, it's all a learning experience.

My very first meal on purees was chicken salad! That was all I could think about for 2 weeks was getting to have chicken salad! I was so excited when my nut told me I could advance to purees!

I went home and mixed it up to the consistancy of baby food and one small bite was all it took! WHAMMO!! it was stuck in my throat for 3 hours! NO GOOD!

they say that chicken is very hard on us becuase it is dry! i put a lot of lite mayo in mine and it was even canned chicken breast that i used and it still did not work! i felt so defeated and upset! i didn't puke, but it was very scary that it just sat there in my throat like that!

i have never tried chicken since and that was 3 weeks ago! I am afraid! I can eat soft food now too! I think we are just too swollen at 2 weeks to eat chicken. My nut says that if you are going to eat it, to make sure that it is in stew or broth and to put gravy on it to make it slide better!

i think i will wait a few more months before trying it again!

good luck to you!

Kelly :D

chicken is still hard for me and I am 3 months out. Unless it is just smothered in some kind of sauce or gravy or something, then I can eat it. I will second the shrimp idea. They go down super easy. Especially boiled cause they get softer. Grilled are ok, too. I can only eat a couple breaded ones though.

Oh, and try your best not to drink at all when you eat. It is sooo hard for me not to, but it is terrible when I do. Comes right back up. I sometimes sip a bit, but that's it.

Canned chicken breast was dry to me even pre-op. Rotisserie chicken or cooking in the crockpot with cream of chicken or mushroom might be easier to eat.

Hi Meggie,

Can't speak for others but Kaiser Fremont advances you to soft foods at two weeks if all is going well. Soft foods include:

Protein: Moist fish, chicken, shellfish, pork, and tofu

Veggies: Soft cooked veggies

Fruit: All fruits, peel removed

Of course it's Protein first, so I haven't really had room for much veggies or fruit. I can eat between 1-2 oz. for lunch and dinner. At Breakfast, I have a hard time with solids, so I've been sticking with greek yogurt every day.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
