Yesterday in my last Nutrition class they were talking about hair loss after surgery. My hair is one of my best assets and I have to say I am a tad freaked out about it thinning or losing it.

Is it temporary? Any solutions to prevent?

Thanks

this is just another one of those things we have decide on. . . loss of hair and be thinner, or keep our hair and stay fat. However, it doesn't happen to everyone. I'm out almost 2 years now and my hair started falling out March of last year, (I was out 3 months at that time) it continued to fall out until this year and now it's slowed down and it's growning back, it looks weird though, coming in like a chia pet. . . sprouty. . . but i was fortunate that it didn't go bald spotty. . . just very very thin. . . now it's growing back, so thats good. some folks are going to give you this Shampoo works, this Vitamin works, but for me none of that worked at all, so I just let nature take its course and dealt with whatever came my way. . .now i'm being rewarded again. . . good luck!

I asked about this too and was told it was basically due to lack of Protein. They said if I keep my Proteins up, it should minimize the damage. I have been trying to be kind to my hair in the meanwhile - washing it every other day instead of every day and once the summer is here, I will try to forego the heat of the hairdryer when I can. I'm worried about it too...

We were told to start taking Biotin (a supplement) as soon as you start considering WLS. The down side is that if it works for you to help save your hair, it can save all of it. I'm hoping that's what's happening for me as I am now sporting a bit of a mustache I never had before. :D

I live with tweezers handy.

I was also wondering about the timing of this. I'd love to hear from others as to when it happened. And I was also wondering about coloring my hair, if that will be too hard on it during this time. I'd hate to have to stop coloring it as much as I'd hate for it to fall out.

I was not religious about the Biotin but I've been taking it several times a week for about a year. I'm hoping it will help.

I'm 6 months out and my hair started falling out by the handfuls at 3 months. It's starting to slow down but I think its slowing down because there isn't much left,. Dr stated the peak of Hair loss lasts for about 3 months but once you see new growth your hair is recovering. Biotin helps with the regrowth and the growth of other hair too. I do still dye my hair about every 6 weeks and it doesn't seem to affect the hair loss. But I dye my hair black, once the hair loss really slows down then I will be lightening my hair

Don't let that be the deciding factor. It's temporary and it doesn't happen to all. I already have massive regrowth and I never went bald.

I'm seriously thinking about not doing this surgery. I can't deal with That.

<<<<<<<tongue.gif

Three months. I have very long thick hair. Some days it comes out in handfuls. I will get a different cut if I have to. It will grow back. I use Henna, and that makes it extra thick feeling. Im sure it will look dorky and not sleek when I starts to grow back in, but I will be a normal weight, and you can do amazing things with a good haircut and color. Don't freak, this is a pic of my Hair loss two days ago.... It was a hair wash day and I decided to collect the hair from the pre brush, wash and blow dry/brush. I do not lose this much every day... this was the most I ever lost from this surgery in one day.... I only wash every 4-5 days and it really comes out then the most. Keep in mind I have hair past my boobs so this bunch is made up of long hairs.....at least its shiny!

I figure if it's really that bad I'll get a wig. A friend of mine had some hormonal issues after her hysterectomy and she acquired "Betty". We'd go out and she'd say "it's a little to warm to wear Betty tonight, I think I'll go natch". Sometimes it really is about attitude.

As long as it will come back, I guess I can take 6 months of thin hair over the knee replacement I absolutely knew was coming my way. I'm more concerned about the color. The idea of a line across my head of color/gray is a little weirder than the Hair loss itself so glad I can continue to color. That and it's too late to do anything about it now. Old Faithful is medical waste and I have to roll with it.

That's a good pic! Looks totally like mine :(...but it was worse a few months back, getting better.

My hair has fallen out twice--once from hypothyroidism, and once after sleeve surgery. It started falling out post-surgery about 4 weeks ago (at three months) but I know it will grow back. I never stopped coloring it-- the follicles are in a resting phase for the hairs that fall out and coloring doesn't make a difference in the amount that comes out; it's not breakage, it's a whole hair from root to tip. I would rather be thin than have thick hair--I can buy wigs, hairpieces, and weaves if I have to--or shave it off and let strangers think I had chemo.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
