I swear I approached this first day of liquids with absolute clarity- forewarned and forearmed with as much advice and knowledge as a person could have thanks to this forum and the many You Tubes I have watched. I knew that starting to day and from here out the key to making a success of all this is Protein, making sure I get the 80 grams my doctor has told me based on my weight and my goal that I need. I got a lot of samples of different Protein powder from different sources that I have had on hand witing sampling. My doctor told me he drinks a Premier Protein Drink from costco every morning and my nutritionist told me they are universally liked by everyone who tries them So I had two vanilla and two chocolate chilling in the fridge awaiting my command.

I shook madly and opened a chocolate one and starting drinking it. To say the taste was disgusting to me was putting it verrry verrry mildly. It came up almost immediately. That is NOT something that happens to me! In addition, I cannot get that aftertaste out of my being- it seems to have melded with me- my dog even smells like the taste, in fact the whole house does- and just looking at a Premier container makes me want to vomit again. I have not been able to even drink anything since and just plan to go to bed and forget the whole day happened.

WTF! I am terrified to try any of them now- I have this ghastly feeling I am allergic to whey protein or just wont be able to find one I can drink and then how am I to take care of myself properly for the next four weeks- two before and two after surgery? What happens if I can' find Protein Powder I can use to give me the extra amount I need?

HELP!!!! EVerything I know seems to have no meaning right now....

Keep looking, Meggie! Every one has a particular body chemistry that responds differently to different flavors and brands. I found that the powders are much better than the ready-mixed cans or bottles. I used one from GNC--they will let you return anything you do not like, and sometimes will give you a sample if they have them. There are forums on this subject with recommendations, but for everyone who likes a brand there is someone who hates it. Just keep looking. (I had a lot of luck with Unjury powders, too.)

Oh thank heaven! I was worried they all have the same aftertaste.

I am also wondering if it is possible to make a success of the sleeve without Protein drinks at all...

I have Unjury sampes, bariatrics advantage sample, and a few others. I will start tomorrow. I am too tired to mess with them.

Thanks you!

Meggie:

I did some research on Premier and even viewed the comments about them on Amazon.com. Seems that they changed the formula not long ago, and it's not going well from what I can tell. Check it out: http://www.amazon.co...howViewpoints=1

If you haven't opened any more, return them. I thought Bariatric Advantage was tasty after I added the Torani SF syrups. I tried the protein powder with Torani - Chocolate, Hazelnut, Caramel, French Vanilla and Almond Roca. (It's a toss up between Chocolate and Almond Roca for 1st place with Hazelnut coming in close too.)

The liquid diet is hard enough without having to try to stomach camel barf! MonkeyAss? You get the picture (of course, YOU'RE a photographer, er videographer.....)

Try the other samples and ditch the Premier.

OMG. I think this wounds worse than the surgery.

Good luck. Kepp us posted on how it goes and what you find.

Vicki

I know- I know- I feel like the ground has been pulled from under me- I felt so sure of my path and my direction this morning and now I am in a panic and even here right now that taste is in my mouth and I feel ill. I will be on the hunt tomorrow for sure...

I love BSN Lean Dessert chocolate fudge pudding.

I like to mix it with their banana fudge pudding.< /p>

I also like BSN Lean Dessert Coconut candy but I can put the

Torini sf Syrup coconut flavor in the fudge pudding flavor and it's just as good.

I get it at vitacost.

Have you gone to the food thread to see all the samples you can get?

You can do it without Protein drinks. I'm intolerant to powdered milk so can't have them. The main thing post op is to get your fluids in. I was allowed mushies after 2 weeks so started to get my Protein then. I've hit 100 grams in a day no probs post op.

This is very helpful to know also! I need to know that if worse comes to worst I can do this without protein supplements. It honestly never occurred to me it would be a problem and I have had such steely resolve since I decided to do this- once I deduced that you needed to get your protein and your fluids to guarantee success- well there was no question to me that I would do exactly that- and I admit I really faltered today. I even questioned for about three minutes canceling the surgery! Thank you for chiming in - it means a great deal.

I know that you said your doc told you to do single digit carbs and double digit Protein, but if you are really not going to be able to get down anything else, try the Protein that I recommended the other day in the Protein drinks area.

The carbs are really not that high, and it is seriously yummy. I've been trying samples of various drinks for weeks, and while I've found that I can chug them and get just about anything down, there's no way I'd be able to sip the stuff post-surgery. The mango one I found is one that is actually sippable! And if you cut a normal serving in half, you'd be at 6 carbs per 12 grams of protein, which is still within your doc's instructions.

Hopefully you'll have more luck with your samples in the days ahead.

You can do this, its really so close now (I'm jealous!!).

I have wasted several hundred dollars trying to find a Protein powder that is palatable. The only one I found that is acceptable came from GNC. It is called Pro Performance AMP. I got it in chocolate and it is ok. I know I am not getting enough protein in daily and it worries me but I do have faith that as I adjust to the sleeve, it can and will get better. Hang in there.

I didn't get Protein in until I hit mushies at nearly 6 weeks post-op. Now with that being said, I know Protein is important, and great for recovery and energy, but hydration is #1 priority early out. I tried over 22 different brands, varieties etc and then figured out I was lactose intolerant, and have a sensitivity to whey. And, let me tell ya, soy protein and egg white protein mixes suck even more than whey.

Check out the Protein Drink forum on here, and see if you can order samples. I did like the taste and texture of the Syntrax cappucino flavor, and I only mixed it with Water due to the milk issues, but I could tolerate the smell, texture and taste.

Jay Robb is a super popular one as well along with the Lean Dessert brand. I also posted an extremely long "Protein drink recipe" topic on here that was emailed me to ages ago that a lot of people have used to enhance the flavor and texture of Protein drinks.

I was hellbent on making Protein Drinks work, but puking or pooping immediately along with the horrendous gas pains was counterproductive to my recovery. I would only purchase samples because even post-op, everything can change, and then you're going to be stuck with tubs of crap you can not tolerate.

I feel your pain Meggie! That is what I thought my first couple of days on Protein shakes!! I tried making my own smoothie with the no fat greek yogurn and skim milk, and a crystal lite packet, total about 30 grams Protein. Its funny but after a while the drinks don't taste that bad, like all things in life, you get used to them. I drink the Atkns low carb, low sugar ones 4 times a day, 15 grams each. Morning, midday, late afternoon and evening, gives me the 60 that I am required. Sometimes I mix a chocolate one with two packs of Starbucks Via Decaf made with one cup of hot Water, pour in the drink and then over a full glass of ice. You will get creative about this, I promise. Good luck!

I like Unjury, the chicken flavor to make a broth Soup and vanilla and chocolate splendor for drinks. BUT you have to flavor the drinks, I use the sf tarrani syrups and dry sf pudding powder and I add ice and blend in the blender. They taste really good when you do that. I really like van w white chocolate and raspberry syrups and chocolate splendor w hazelnut.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
