Hello

This is my first post here on the forum. I am here at a friends recommendation. (Another fellow officer who has had the "sleeve" and now lost 95lbs).

Currently I am 6'4" and 320lbs and have tried all sorts of diets and drugs but the weight comes right back. Its nice to be recognized as the BIG GUY in uniform but now its getting to the point of people looking at me differently. I can see that as I have gotten older (now 39) they look at me and under estimate me, and thats not the way its been. Now for my health, family, job and most importantly my pride....today I am calling my primary physician and getting referred to a bariatric surgeon that does the vertical sleeve.

If anyone who reads this knows the name of a good vertical sleeve surgeon in the Indianapolis area please reply. Also looking to get involved in helping others and support groups around the area if anyone knows how to guide me there also.

I will post -- my beginning and journey pictures so please stay tuned -- TODAY IS THE DAY I AM CHANGING MY LIFE!

Mark

I am from Richmond, IN and I haven't been able to find any drs in Indiana that have experience with the sleeve. I did find Trace Curry from Dayton, OH that seems to have experience. I will be changing jobs in June and I know the new insurance covers wls but I don't know anything else yet. Looking forward to finding out though. Please let me know what you find out about drs. St. Vincent Bariatrics does free seminars but I don't think they have a lot of surgeons doing the sleeve.

I am from Richmond, IN . I too have been researching drs that do the sleeve from Indiana. Most of the drs I have found have little to no experience with the sleeve. I am interested in Trace Curry from Dayton, OH. It isn't that far and if the insurance I will have with my new employer will cover, I probably will go with him. Sherri

I do not know anyone. I just wanted to say I live in California, but am originally from Indiana. Terre Haute to be exact.

Just wanted to say good luck to you. Keep us posted on your journey!

I live in Terre Haute, and went to Dr. Jon Mandelbaum at St Francis on the south side. I have also heard there are a couple docs in carmel that do it, Dr. Inman and one of her partners in that practice.

Dr. Mandelbaum is very capable, but not the most personable. He did a RNY for my dad a couple years ago as well.

My recovery was very easy and his staff were great to work with. One caution: his dieticians are extremely picky. They held my surgery up for three weeks because they thought I was non compliant with the pre-op diet. Do what they tell you to do to a T if you go there.

Hopefully you have found someone. But if not, I am having my sleeve done on Wednesday, June 8th with Dr. Rosemarie Jones in Indy. I am revising from the band to the sleeve. I will let you know how it goes, but I know she is good.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
