Fluid intake after surgery...

Recommended Posts

Hey I'm new and will post my story in another thread.

Had my sleeve done March 1st

Quick question: How many TOTAL oz should I be taking in a day post opp?

I have no problem only doing 4 oz of liquid at meal times, and I have no problem drinking non stop. I don't want to over do it, but I simply haven't "challenged" my pouch to this point. I'm worried I may either stretch my pouch from drinking too much (after the first couple of days I quit measuring anything but meals), or dehydrate myself by drinking too little.

Pre opp I was driking about 70-90 oz per day.

Post opp the first 24 hours after surgery I probably only had 10 oz total, but that has increased to about 35-40 oz per day (3 meals of 4 oz liquds the rest being unsweet tea, Water, or juice)

The diet my doctor gave me calls for full liquids in 3- 4 oz meals per day, and to sip the rest of the day. (No amount given)

I'm Never Hungry!!!!!!!!! But I am always very thirsty, and I've been afraid to try to drink too much too fast.

Thanks...I really don't think 64 will be a problem for me, I was just worried I was "sipping too much."

Sipping is never a problem at first, gulping is. More power to you if you can sip 64oz in the beginning!

when you have this surgery you stomach has a straw or funnel effect. On liquids my doc told me to drink 2 gallons if I wanted because it goes right though you. It might seem if you have messed up your sleeve right now but when you get to thick liquids yogurt or sf pudding you will notice you will start getting full.. Soft foods I can eat 2 or 3 ounces. I rarely stay hungry as you and it is not hard to go all day and not get the food or for that fact the Water. It got to the point I was asking my surgeon for video or picture proof that he actually did the surgery..lol Any way you want feel any restricttion until you get to the more solid foods..

Riverking--

I have the same surgery date as you 3/1. Had my MD follow up appt yesterday. I asked that same question as I can drink Water not stop but was not sure if I could--the said drink as much water as If want--with the limitation of before/after meals. I advanced to Phase II foods now.

Glad to hear that. Some one else stated on hear pudding and things like that should fill me up. They do. I have to take time to consume anything other that a clear liquid.

suzylou congrats on moving to stage II. I can, but I honestly have no desire to. I'm getting all the Protein I need with shakes, and I feel fine with just some reduced energy. Maybe in a week or two, but for right now I'm good.

I had surgery 20 December and it has been only in the past couple of weeks that I can drink like I used to. This was the hardest part of life after surgery since I am a gulper not a sipper. I have always been a thirsty girl (not diabetic even remotely), and instinctively drain whatever glass put before me (used to be Coke Zero). This was a huge hinderance to staying hydrated because I would get anxious at the mere thought of drinking something, because of the inevitable pain that came with it. After a LOT of retraining, and healing, I can drink normally again... Albeit no Zeros anymore. I get in about 70 ounces a day now, and am down 50 pounds.

My surgery was Feb. 2nd and I have no thirst or desire to eat. I do get a little nauseated if I haven't eaten for a long time.

Can I ask why some people call their stomachs pouches? I don't have a pouch, just a stomach that's been reduced in size.

I am with you on not really wanting anything yet. I could have had cottege cheese, yougart, potatoe or pudding last noc but just did not want it, had my shake instead. I easily get all of my Protein in with my powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein shakes mad with milk--not hungry at all. My doc like others wants to move us to get all of our Protein through food as soon as possible so I am going to start today...had a tbs of coco wheats...went down fine...did not feel much restriction...but made it real thin and used my baby spoon. I think I will try some cottege cheese or Soup for lunch.

Not sure re the pouch name....I named mine Sylvia.....wonder if I would have passed my psych consult if they knew....guess I won't mention my super coooshhie big pu rple body pillows that I named barny and baby bop----got them at Sams and for anyone that is going in I strongly recommend them they are like 10 bucks and super comfy for your hosp bed.....got a really cozy yellow fluffy throw that I took too...so much more comfy than th flat hsp pillows and ugly ole scratch blankets.

RNY folks use 'Pouch' to describe the faux stomach they have after the surgery...

Most sleevers use 'sleeve' to refer to their newly trimmed stomach.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
