Texas bandster

Recommended Posts

Hi Big Unit!

I am waiting for insurance, (UHC PPO) approval and hope to be banded within 2-4 weeks too unsing Dr. Spivak. If so, we will have to keep in touch because we will be be close on the same banding schedule. I am really looking forward to this trip into better health. I live in North Houston, but grew up in the Southwest part of Houston. Where are you? What insurance did you have and how long did it ake you to get approval? I gave birth 28 years ago to my daughter in Park Plaza right after it was built, never thought I would be going back there! Talk to ya soon!

Hello There!

I live in McKinney & get banded in a week (11/20/2007) by Dr. Cribbins, as well. I am so excited I can't stand it! I feel like Christmas is coming early this year.

I have a question about the $30 book they give you on your final meeting w/ Dr. C before the surgery. What book is it?/Is it the kind of thing I could get at the 1/2 Price books & save $20?

I mean every $20 helps :)

I am getting Banded next week and am starting to get nervous. For those of you who have had it done... What has been the best and worst?

Here's my story:

I spent 4 hrs post op before they sent me home. 1/2 hr car ride - I felt OK - but the walk into the house got me a nauseus - and i did throw up just a little. I think if I could have stayed another hour that might not have happened. Everyone handles anesthesia differently. Nothing major to worry about!

Too sore to get in and out of bed, so I either slept on the couch or the recliner till I was able to manage it better! No big deal - just find what works for you

I treated myself to a manicure and pedicure on Day 5 - yoo hoo!!!

Day 6 - Musch foods - YEA!!!! I was SO EXCITED to eat Jello!!!!! If there is a Tom Thumb (Randall's/SAfeway) near you - the Soups are fabuous - I had the Tomato Basil (strained it the first day just in case) - it was WONDERFUL!!!!!

Back to work day 7 - I have a desk job - only worked 7 hours the first two days of the week (by choice).

I was really nervous going into this cause of all the scary comments I had read - but the vast majority of people don't have any problems at all - I didn't!!!

My favorite discovery - Muscle Milk from GNC as your liquid Protein. It is MARVELOUS!!!! Much better than the product I purchased from my Dr! Check the label for the nutritional content - and adjust according to your Doctor's guidelines. I have a friend who is 18 month Post Op - with a Pregnancy in between - and she drank the Muscle Milk the entire time. The only flavor I have tried is the Milk chocolate.

Well - that's all I can think of - boy I did ron on, didn't I ????

Best of luck to you!

JoAnne

Hi, I am in San Antonio but am just getting started on the process. From what I understand, I will probably be approved for banding in Jan/Feb. I will probably wait until Feb because of office obligations. Anyway have any comments about SATX facilities or doctors?

Congrats to those of you that have been successful, Prayers to those that are struggling.

Piddles

Dr. Wright from SATX will be doing my surgery at the NIX on the 31st of Dec. I really like him, all question or concerns were answered quickly. The only problem I had was it seems the first fax sent to the office had to go into a black hole. All fax's I sent or had sent had to be sent twice. All of the staff is great.

Genea.

Hi Texas Bandsters! I was banded by Dr. Spivak 11/20/07 and so far so good. I got my 1st fill 12/27. My weight loss had stalled before the fill but now my weight is dropping again.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
