Welcome.....this is the best decision you have made for yourself. As for Protein supplements everyone has different taste and after surgery your taste may change. Personally I am using the carnation instant Breakfast sugar free chocolate and french vanilla. I add 1/3 c of dry milk to increase the protein to 21 grams with skim milk at 210 calories. Sometimes I heat the milk and it is like hot chocolate and also mix some Torina sugar free syrups to change up the flavor. I have used the Walmart EAS advantage and have tried from GNC the Isopure. Good Luck. This was the best present I gave myself.

I am with you on the excitement. My surgery date is 12/30. I had my EGD done on Thursday and I am so ready to have the surgery. I have been on Optifast for 2 weeks, but I have been reading and researching and from listening to what people are saying about getting the Protein done, I went to the Vitamin Shoppe and got some liquid whey protein. I found some that was 4 oz and has 55 g of protein. I figured if I can get 4 oz of that down I will be doing a lot better than getting 4- 8oz boxes of Optifast down in a day.

Good luck on your surgery.

I'm curious about something. I have read an awful lot where people are asked to go on the liquid diets 10 days or 2 wks before their surgery. What is the reasoning for this? Is it to help you get in the mode for post-surgery life or is there a medical reason for it?

It is to shrink the fatty deposits around the liver so as to make the surgery easier to navigate. The liver must be retracted as it sits in front of the stomach. That is the short answer.

Hi there onediva! All the best on your new journey!! Welcome to the club, and soon you will see that you have every reason in the world to be on top of the moon!

As far as supplements, if you are in the majority you will discover that your taste will change after surgery. It's the most bizarre thing. One suggestion I could give you is that you should get the "samples" online of many different types. That way you will find out what your liking is. What you like now probably won't be the same once you have your surgery.

I really enjoyed the unjury after surgery - so that might be a sample you'd like to try.

All the best!!!

Sometimes even our family's best intentions and concerns can cause some doubts. My husband had a total meltdown a couple of days before my surgery. But if you are ready to lose weight and this is your decision and you are comfortable with your surgeon GO FOR IT ! ! ! I had my surgery Dec. 13 and when you wake up and everything is done and you are fine they will support you. Now to your question of Protein Drinks. I would try several samples. EAS and the Atkins are good, but the Protein is only 15-17grams. The Pure Protein drinks have 23 grams. GNC store ( or similar stores ) may offer sample protein powders so you can try them before you buy a bulk amount. Will watch for your progress, all of us VSGers are pulling for you.

Thank you, how did you feel right after your surgery? I have been trying to find all of the information I can and, some people talk about how unbearable the pain was after surgery. Also have you had any problem with acid reflux? Thank for any information you can give me. I have finally appointments on wednesday....I am nervous.

My surgen says the purpose of the liquid diet is to deplete your glycogen stores...it make the laparoscopic surgery easier....Hope that helped.

Its tuesday morning 0418.....Two days left until my surgery!!!!!!!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
