Any Post WLS People here with FM?

Recommended Posts

I'm pre WLS - December 2010 will hopefully be the time I change my life.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2008 but I suspect I've had it for close to twenty years. It's been much worse in the past few years because I've gained weight, been under a TON of stress and emotional distress, and have been sick because of toxic mold in my home.

Exercise is very difficult for me because it causes pain during and a LOT of pain after and I struggle to get through it because I have muscle weakness and fatigue easily. I've never been one to get the adrenaline rush from exercise but I used to enjoy the burn the day or two after a great workout because it meant that I accomplished something good with my body. These days, the burn plus the FM pain and discomfort is just more than I can handle.

I don't take pain meds because I have some weird chemical sensitivities and they cause too many complications with side effects. I deal with the pain the best I can but even gentle yoga kicks my butt!

Does it ever get easier?!?!? Will losing some of this extra weight help help my FM symptoms? I know plenty of skinny people with FM so I'm scared that I won't be successful with this surgery because I'm so adverse to exercise. :( Anyone?

I dont have FM myself but here is what I would expect:

FM is often linked with sleep issues and obesity can certainly contribute to those so yeah I would say it is possible. It will also be easier to get massage because the therapist will be better able to feel the anatomy without the gigantic layer of fat covering it (other bodyworkers would be the same) so it would make it easier to get better quality treatments. Lastly exercise is probably much easier when you are skinny cuz self-esteem is higher & FM people who exercise tend to do much better with it than those who do not. Exercise also helps improve sleep quality which, as I alluded to earlier, some docs say is what really lies at the heart of the whole fibro myalgia/chronic fatigue issue.

I hope that helps. Did you get cut yet? How did it go?

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm now scheduled for Jan 28th with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Going it alone so pretty nervous about that but I noticed at least three others on here that will be there the same time so I'm hoping to connect with them! They are actually picking me up at home! Can't get much more convenient than that, huh? lol

My mom has fm and recently had the rny surgery. She had lost almost 40 pounds preop and stopped taking any pain meds before surgery. She was taking something along the line of vicodin regularly for the pain before losting some of the weight. Since surgery a few weeks ago she has been doing good. She says she still has pain but its more manageable than before. She is even walking at the gym.

I think it will help. Aerobic exercise is one of the only 3 treatments for fibromyalgia that actually has research backing it up, so definitely keep trying to do even just a little bit.

I wanted to see if any of the people that have fibromyalgia has noticed change in their amount of pain since being sleeved since the since last has been a few months out. I suffer from it as well as back knots and back pain from severe whiplash from a car accident. I am very interested in knowing if the surgery has helped. I am actually there has not been more conversation on this topic since it seems so many people are diagnosed with it more now a days.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
