Hi Everyone,

I am now 9 weeks post op, is it too soon for me to eat a taco from Taco Bell or make my own? As of now, I can't stomach eating taco meat by itself anymore (hopefully this will pass) :-(

Thanks in advance for your suggestions/comments :-)

Hi thickphilly,

Thanks for your response. I know you don't mean any harm :-) I can stomach eating the meat, its just I can't stand to eat the meat without the taco shell as of lately (the meat tastes funny to me now w/o the shell). It's kind of like how some people are with Protein shakes (myself included), you can drink them, but the taste of the shake makes you want to gag.

I found some low-carb tortillas that would probably make a good taco. I'd say make your own, and try to keep it reasonable calories/carbs based on your guidelines and you should be fine. You might only be able to eat half, but it'll probably taste really good to you with those few extras and a shell.

I'm 9 weeks out and have had tacos a few times already. My first one was a homemade hard-shell one with ground beef; it went down pretty well. I could only have maybe 2/3 of it. My second one was a hard-shell one with chicken from a restaurant maybe a week later - went down without a problem. I actually had a few bites of a fish taco from a restaurant this evening. That one was made with a soft corn shell and it made me a bit uncomfortable for a few minutes. Based on my experience, I say give it a shot, but start with a hard-shell one.

My doc says that it is easy enough to eat most anything you can get in a mexican restaurant except flour tortillas. I have found that this is true. Eat 4 nachos, 3/4 of a taco, a small tamale, some mexican stew, 3/4 of an enchilada, yum, full of good Protein, with Beans you get fibre and with tomatoes, avacado and tomatillos you get antioxidants, high fat true enough but you will be eating very small amounts. chips are sliders, as long as you chew them well they go down easy. If you are okayed for solid foods at 9 wks, I would think that a half or 3/4 of a taco would be a good choice, but chew chew chew!

I guess everyone really is different. Heck I am 10 weeks out as of yesterday and I have been eating pretty much anything I want since around week 6. The only thing I find my stomach not liking so much is broiled shrimp and any sort of chinese food. I do make a conscious effort to choose healthy/low cal high Protein foods but I dont hesitate to eat all sorts of foods. I just eat such small portions i dont sweat it. As long as the scale is moving in the correct direction I am feeling good.

Hey Lady,

Have you tried making a taco-less taco? I'm actually eating it right now. Basically, I combined everything that I would put on the inside of a taco and ate it out of a bowl instead of putting it in a tortilla or shell. It kind of tastes the same. Just an idea in case you try a tortilla and it doesn't work.

I made one the other night with shredded lettuce and Tomato as the base, like Fleur recommends. It tastes great and you get a little crunch from the lettuce. Not the same as the crunchy tortilla but a lot safer on your healing stomach. :) With a little sourcream and a bump of salsa it is like a mini taco salad.< /p>

Sooo I'd like to amend my statement. This might work easier for you since you're farther out than I am. I saw my NUT yesterday and because I'm not getting enough Protein, she gave me suggestions on things to eat. One thing was refried Beans and that's why I decided to do the taco-less taco tonight. Mine only has refried Beans, a sprinkle of cheese, a tsp of salsa and a tsp of sour cream.

As soon as the second bite hit my stomach, I got the worse gas pains EV-ER! I feel like my stomach is about to explode!

It still tastes good, though :D

Oh, and one more idea.

When I lived in Japan, I was introduced to taco rice, which IMO, is amazing!

It's exactly what it sounds like. All the taco fixings (meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa, etc) over rice. Yum-o!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
