Which OTC Acid Reducers do you recommend?

Hi everyone! I'm just wondering which types of acid reducers are you using, and why?

Also are there some you would never suggest?

I know there are some that are just auto suggested by our surgeons, but sometimes thats all they are... suggestions. Everyone is different and instead of trying all the different types maybe I can get a few ideas from some of ya.

I would use Prilosec OTC if I didn't get my scripts for free on base. If you choose to go with Prilosec, let me know, because I get coupons for it all the time.

I talked to my surgeon about Prilosec OTC, and he told me if I ever forgot to call in my refill or was out of town and forgot my RX and had to use OTC, to still follow the RX directions to wait 1hr before eating after taking it.

I know a lot of people really like that new one called Prevacid.

I take Prilosec, but you should really follow your doctor's advice for medication, not an online forum. There's usually a good reason why they have their favorites, and you can ask why they prefer what they prefer. Prilosec OTC is pretty small, therefore easy to swallow. I get a prescription capsule that I can open up and swallow the beads. Whatever you choose, generally take it in the morning, about a half hour before eating.

Again, ask your doc- also, if they write a prescription, it may be a cheaper alternative to OTC if you have insurance.

The stomach isn't used to not making enough acid for our big tummies. So, the PPI protects the staple line, and acid reflux is common with the sleeve especially the first 3-6 months post-sleeve.

Over production of acid can also cause false hunger which is what I experienced before going on Prilosec. My surgeon doesn't put his patients on it immediately after surgery either, but some deal with the acid, or deal with the false hunger. I chose to do neither, and pop my Prilosec religiously.

My surgeon prescribed Omeprazole (which is the generic name of Prilosec or Zegerid), and the OTC generic works fine for me. Some people have said they don't like the generic brands, but for me they work the same.

Tiffy, I've bought both Prilosec and Prevacid to try either. I'll find out which one works best for me. If I tend to prefer Prilosec I'll let you know, thanks for the offer! That would be super helpful. Aceves will have me take it for minimum six months... so that's awhile.

I use Zantac 150, twice a day, with the approval of my doctor. The store-brand equivalent is really cheap at Walmart.< /p>
