To go or not to go....that is the question

Recommended Posts

My mom was talking about burgers the other day. We told her about Red Robin's burgers. She's never been there. She and my dad just moved to Puerto Rico, and I don't think they have Red Robin over there. She's going back to PR next Thursday, so my hubby decided to take her and the kids to eat there tonight.

I am 9 days post op. I know I can get their French Onion Soup broth base without the cheese or bread. But I'm not sure if being there will make me sad. It's either go with them or stay home by myself. :)

Go with your family!! I've been out a few times, when my mum came all the way to England from South America, they would eat burgers, fish and chips, and I would quite happily sit there having my soup!!

Have you been there before? I personally can't stand it (then again, I'm not a fan of classic American foodfare, period). That said, I've gone out with friends to restaurants I like since the surgery and was able to eat broth without too much mourning on my part.

I thought it was hard to go and watch my family pig out. But perhaps bring a treat for yourself in case dinner doesn't work out well. Sometimes things were better made from home initially. But then again, it might taste great.

If I did not think I could eat there, I'd be full when I went so I didn't feel sad.

It's hard to say for sure, but I would probably go. You already know that there is something there you can have and at 9 days out after a little Soup you will most likely be so full you won't even want to think about eating anything else, so you won't be sad. It would probably be sadder to miss out on these last moments before your parents go back. Next visit, you can have some of that burger.

I would go because you'll be amazed at just how much you enjoy the social aspect of spending time with your family vs. worrying about what to chow down on from the menu. That has been my experience all along. I enjoy social events weekly, and sometimes several times a week those events all involve food. I never realized how much time I spent eating vs. time spent with good friends and fellowship.

Don't sit at home staring at 4 walls, go sip your Soup, love your family, and remember in the near future, food will not be a challenge, nor will eating out.

Go in with a positive outlook on the situation, and what you can gain from it rather than what you think you'll be missing out on.

Go!! you will love being with your family!! I was there about 2 weeks ago and ordered a cup of a southwest chicken Soup - it was perfect and tasted so good. I was completely satisfied afterwards and not too stuffed. Learning to not be scared when you go to a restaurant is a big thing post-sleeve, but there are always things you can have so don't stay home - you will be glad you went!

Thanks guys. I went and had a good time I sipped on my (way too salty) broth and was fine watching my family enjoy their meal. While helping my 4 year old get the whipped cream off of his shake, I almost absentmindedly put the end of the straw with shake and cream in my mouth, but stopped myself. LOL. It was a nice time and my mom really loved her burger and garlic fries.

Good for you, my vote was for you to go too....don't miss out on these types of opportunities. The reason I got the sleeve was so I could start LIVING again, which means being with my family, and having fun together. Getting my head around eating out, and watching others eat in my early days, and even now, is a challange, yes. But oh, it's for such a short time, so don't isolate yourself, and enjoy every experience you are faced with head on, chin up and determined to succeed!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
