USA Doctors vs Mexican Doctors

Recommended Posts

Everywhere I look more and more people are going to Mexico for their VSG. I get that if you are selfpay the cost is great.......Is there anyone you know in the USA that the cost would be the same as going to Mexico? I just can't see going out of the country! Thanks much for your reply!:(

There are a few Doctors in the US that are charging around 11,000 from what I understand from reading post on here. But I do not know of many are in the same price range of the Mexico Doctors. That could be one of the reasons you have not received very many responses. When I decided to go to Mexico most US Doctors were charging 12,000 to 30, 000.

Near my home the US Doctors charge 15000.00 self-pays for the Lapband.

I hope you find the answers you are looking for and good luck with your WL journey.

I went to Mexicali, Mexico with Dr. Aceves and I had an excellent experience, he and his staff are very prepared and extremely professional. So, I really recommend him....check him out and if you need any more information, please feel free to ask.

During my research, I found that the 'requirements' to get the surgery in the US are 'higher' than in MX. Meaning you have to be fatter and sicker before a US doc will consider you for WLS. Many of us with lower BMI's (lower than 35) want to prevent the illnesses from obesity by going the WLS route in MX.

At least that was my primary reason. Given that the cost is lower and the doctor I chose is probably better than most US doc's doing this procedure is why I'm going to MX.

This question is tough to answer other than to advise you to be sure to make phone calls to the physician offices to be sure you are getting adequate quotes and information on results. The sleeve is often done with too large of a stomach pouch and leak rates can be as high as 5%(worldwide).

One of the doctors I've been looking into is Dr. Guillermo Alvarez in Piedras Negras, Mexico. It's across the border from Eagle Pass. It would be convenient for me because I was born and raised in Texas and know a lot of people there still. Has anyone on here had their VSG by him or know of someone who has? Thanks for your help.

I myself, have been "shopping around". I live in Miami and the VSG runs from $14,500 to $20,000. This does not include the price for the endoscopy you need prior to surgery and preop testing.

Recently I stumbled across Dr. Guillermo Alvarez's website and have been curious, yet skeptical about getting my surgery out of the country. The price is a little less than $9000 with EVERYTHING included EXCEPT the airfare.

I am currently still doing my research....I'll keep you guys posted on what I finally decide to do. Although the price for Dr. Alvarez is might tempting.

The question would be about the after care? Would a US doc be willing to take care of you if you got into some situation after a mexico doc did the surgery? This is what prevented me from going to mexico. . . my self pay was $15,500 in San Antonio TX and that included everything plus 1 year of after care. Not too bad I think

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
