some people do drink sodas.

I have had sips of both flat and fizzy pop. It really didn't taste good at first but it is getting better.

supposedly the carbonation irrates your stomach .... and it might explode. Or something like that : )

I would save it for "later" when your tummy is more adjusted. And make sure you stick to the diet variety. You won't want all of those extra calories! : )

Totally agree ... well, maybe not the exploding part! But, you do need to give your tummy time to heal. This past Sunday (2 days prior to 3 months) I had my first Pepsi Max. It took 4 hours to finish, but it was soooooo delicious. :redface1: Prior to that time, I had a few sips here & there, but it didn't taste that good to me. Just give it time.

I used to love Cokes, and tried one a couple of months or so after surgery, but it tasted WAY too sweet and I only had a few sips. I drank an un-carbonated orange soda drink last weekend with no problem though. Though I guess if it isn't carbonated it's probably not considered a soda...:redface1:

I drink soda weekly, but I'm a lot further out and have surpassed my goal weight. I avoided them during my losing stage because it's just wasted calories.

The first time I had soda there was a bit of discomfort, I burped and it was gone. It used to take me all day long to sip on a soda to get it down, and I'd have to drink Water in between. I can drink a soda in a couple of hours now, and have no issues. When I drink soda, sometimes I burp, sometimes I don't and it never hurts.

I'll throw out there that my surgeon and many others do not believe soda will cause stretching. We have a pyloric valve meaning liquids go in, hit the valve, and they leave our stomach. The Fluid is not sitting in there brewing. We drink, burp, it's done. Even some patients that have RNY state that their surgeons do not back up the theory of soda stretching their pouches or stomas. Overeating is more likely the cause of pouch stretching. It's nearly impossible to stretch our sleeves considering the type of tissue that is left behind. Esophageal dilation is more common with sleeve patients overeating instead of stomach stretching. When we eat, the food literally has no where to go except up which causes the esophageal issues. I've been drinking soda for well over 5 months now on a fairly regular basis, and my sleeve is definitely not stretched. I'll have to see if I can get the milli/centimeter measurements from my surgeon when I see him next month or in June. He should be able to get them from the endoscopy report.

My doctor told us no carbonated drinks ever. He said that the heat from your body will cause even a "flat" soda to continue to release gas after you drink it, and that with continued use, this will cause your pouch to expand and eventually stretch to a point that you are less likely to lose and/or more likely to regain weight that you've lost. My mother-in-law had gastric by-pass surgery years ago. She drinks soda all the time--but she also still weighs over 250 and is now able to eat a huge plate full of food like anyone else.

I'm almost 5 months, when I really crave a Dr Pepper I get it, pour about 1/2 of it into a glass of ice and give the other 1/2 to my daugther or someone at work...then I sip on my 1/2 glass until time to go home...I usually end up drinking 2-3 oz of actually soda over the course of a couple hours...so far I haven't had any problems, but I REALLY limit it to once a week treat, I do the full calorie sodas--never liked the diet ones. I have had a little burping ..but the flavor of the soda makes up for it!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
