How many calories do we need to survive?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on March 8th and I've hardly eaten anything since. I feel like I was able to get more fluids and Proteins in when I first came home than I can now. Part of this is because the thought of food or drinks repulses me. I also find that if I do get a few bites of something in, I am uncomfortable for hours and drinking makes it worse. When I try to sip, sip, sip my tummy becomes very uncomfortable. I think I'm averaging 200-300 calories a day.

I did call the drs office on Monday and she really wasn't listening to me, just kept telling me I need to eat something 6 times a day. If I did that I would not get ANY fluids in.

I'm calling today again after they get back from their luch break, but i was just curios if anyone knows if this is enough to survive on. I personally don't think it is :cool0:

I probably averaged that my first two weeks or so. I didn't concentrate as much on calorie sources as I did hydration. Have you tried hot beverages like Decaf tea or broth? They seemed to go down easier for me than cold liquids.

As far as the doctor office - if you don't think she's listening, ask for someone else that will.

I was on liquids for the first two weeks post op. I ate a lot of no sugar added fruit juice popsicles. When I went to full liquids I mostly ate 1/4 cup of greek yogurt. I sometimes had a cup of chicken broth. I mostly just tried to get in my 64 oz of fluids after day 5. I felt zero hunger until Day 10, then started to get tiny little hunger pangs. Hang in there. It all gets better very quickly!

I survived on a few hundred calories those first few weeks after surgery and, like the previous poster, I drank my share of decaf/herbal tea to help get the Water in.

Good luck,

Pennie

As long as you're getting your liquid and Vitamins in, don't sweat the calories yet. You can go literally for weeks without eating and be fine as long as the body's got fat to use as fuel (it's when the fat's gone that the body starts using its own tissue for Protein and the metabolism shuts down). You'll be able to take in more within the next couple of weeks...you're doing fine, don't worry! :(

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
