GOAL ! ! ! (not the field goal type)

Dear Tiffany,

I am thrilled with your success! You have been so helpful in my decision to go

with the SLEEVE rather than with the LAP BAND. I am set for surgery in just a

few days (January 11th) BUT my PRE-diet has not gone well for me. I have not

stuck too it to the letter as I was only supposed to have liquids, Protein Bars,

Jello and Protein Shakes for TWO WEEKS prior to my january 11th date. I have cheated with eating turkey, chicken, a hamburger, etc BUT will try to stick with it starting next tomorrow up to January 11th. Did YOU have to do such a strict PRE-DIET and do you think I'll have to postpone my SLEEVE surgery now due to my lack of self-control? I weigh 195lbs and am 5-foot 5inches tall so I

don't know if the pre-op diet is more important to follow if you are morbidly obese or if it is just as important for me to follow to shrink my liver? I've read

about some SLEEVE patients that DID NOT have any Pre-Op diet at all. Any advice or information to help me? Best, Courtney at kabringgold@aol.com

Hey Courtney,

I only had to do low carb/high protein a week pre-op with my sleeve revision.

I was morbidly obese with a BMI of 47 the day of my revision. The pre-op diet is supposed to help get you accustomed to lower caloric intake, shrink the liver, and help with the transition to the post-op diet of Clear Liquids.

I honestly can't answer if the "cheating" will postpone your surgery, but I advise you to discuss it with your surgeon. If you have access to a dietician/nutritionist, definitely ask them for some direction.

Feel free to email me as well tifjb1@yahoo.com you can also find me on Facebook with that email address.

Tiffy, Let me add my congrats to you too! I hope to be where you are soon, but I sure am slowing down. I actually want to be 3 pounds below goal, if that makes sense. You truly are such a help to so many people and so gracious to answer and be encouraging. I went over to the OH forum and was amazed at how mean they can be to each other. You set a great example of how to act on this forum. Thank you for that!!!

Hope to join you in the goal-club soon. I'll be posting when I do.

Jennifer (jpetty)

I had my revision on June 3rd, leak repair on June 5th, on June 10th I had the pic line and TPN started, and I was released on the 1800 calorie TPN bag fed to me by a pic line in my left arm June 12th. I had the TPN until June 25th. So, I didn't lose a lot of weight the first month. Because I was being force-fed 1800 calories a day. In July when I was hospitalized, I ate a mushy diet with some soft meats. So, I would say that from the day I was released from the hospital, and recovered after the TPN episode is when my weight loss really started.

I did battle with getting in more than 400 calories some days, but I did stick to the "program" for the first 4 months. I forced myself to be very strict because I wanted to maximize the "honeymoon" phase of the weight loss. Once I realized that I was still losing more than 3 pounds a week consistently (around mid-September), my surgeon and I decided it was time to start eating whatever my body would tolerate. That's when I started introducing carbs, and a more balanced diet. I've been able to get my weight loss to slow down to 1-2 pounds a week, and now I haven't lost anything in about a week because I'm at goal. I've actually lost and gained the same 1.5lb over the last 3-4 days. Gotta love the Water weight pre-period.

I consider myself making it to goal in 6 months with the sleeve.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
