With the bypass, it interfers with the digestion of lactose (milk sugar), because of removal of part of the small intestines, but later may adapt itself, and then malabsorbtion doesn't work so well for them. With the sleeve, I don't know why we might become latose intolerant or suddenly not be lactose intolerant anymore, good question. I can eat yogurt, cottage cheese w/o any problems. If I bought those WW ice cream cups, it would be disaster for me, though. I don't trust myself.

I was told it's because our stomach is smaller and also because it's irritated early out from surgery. A lot of food intolerances go away over time as the stomach heals, so that part makes sense.

OTOH, I think my lactose intolerance may be getting worse, beause now I can't eat ice cream either and I could before.

Transfer addiction...... mine turned into shopping... first it was a necessity- I had NOTHING that fit.... Then when I saw the sizes dropping.... I was thrilled. going from 3-4 X STRETCH pants to a ZIPPERED size 16- totally AMAZING... and now I can get into a 14- so yeah........ shopping is fun.

I had only shopped online at 'fat' girl places... and had several of the same tops because I can only wear certain colors at work. I hated to try clothes on- was tooo much like 'work'........ now I love it!

And it's not just clothes I shop for- it's things for my house- and now that my weight has slowed- I don't need anything now but a sweater and a winter coat- so going shopping tomorrow w/my friend:001_tongue:And I'm a bargain shopper... not gonna spend much on clothes.

I'm painting- inside and out- just to keeep me busy and doing things I found tooo difficult to do before the WL. Cleaning closets, going thru pictures, just things I had put off....

Wow, you sound just like me. . . people can't believe I hate shopping! But I do, why? because nothing fits, just LaneBryant or Roamans, how embarrassing is that? And EXPENSIVE!!! After I'm sleeved (January) hopefully I'll lose enough to make shopping interesting enough to go with daughter (she LOVES shopping) . . . she commented me the other day that I'll be able to fit into all her debutante gowns! Not a bad idea! Might just do that. . . What I really love to do even now at 330lbs is clean and yard work. . . (yes I have an immaculate yard :001_smile:) I also have a huge aquarium that takes my time (love my fish) and I enjoy crocheting. . .I have never been a sweets person I can take em or leave em whatever, . . I enjoy going to the gym and fishing. . . so I guess those will be my outlet. . .

I don't buy them very often. I hate to grocery shop. They come in packs of 2. Plus I figure 140 calories is better than however many calories are in one scoop at Baskin and Robbins. That is my justification. I will grocery shop when I run out of my sf ff fudgsicles though. They come in a box of 20 I think, so I must grocery shop every 3 weeks.

I just have a basic question, and am not sure where to post?

Before surgery, I would have wine at night on the weekends and am

wondering when and if I will be able to work that into my caloric intake.

I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery and am wondering if anyone else

enjoys an occasional glass of wine?

I can't drink wine - it gives me a horrible headache - almost instantly. I did try a drink while I was on the cruise, and was only able to tolerate 2-3 swallows as it burned all the way down. I finally gave up and dumped it out.

You could post it in post op questions and answers. I can't answer you because I don't like wine.

I talked to my surgeon about this a couple weeks ago, and he cleared me to have a few sips of wine. I doubt I'll ever be able to consume an entire glass of wine again. I am almost 4 months out, and my surgeon advised me to steer clear of super dry red wines (I didn't ask why, but that's what he said). I haven't tried any alcoholic beverages since surgery. He advised that if I wanted to experiment with alcohol to do it very slowly, and minimal amounts. I have a feeling just a couple of ounces will have me boozed up.

WLS has completely taken the joy out of alcohol for me. I get word-slurring drunk on a tiny amount and 30 min. later I'm stone, cold sober. I never get that nice mellow feeling.

I didn't do alcohol for most of my weight loss phase though... I wanted to lose as fast as possible because I knew maintenance would be the hard part and I wanted to start on it as soon as I could.

Oh good its not just me then!! I have a daquiri the other day, was giggly after a few sips and sober 10 minutes later! I was never a big drinker anyway, so I don't really miss it.

All I have wanted to do since surgery is clean. I have cleaned 4 rooms from top to bottom and taken 7 boxes of odds and ends of stuff to the donation center. My husband wants to know what I am going to do after I get all the rooms cleaned? LOL

Isn't it great! You have so much energy after the surgery, me too. I bet you will then move on to shopping, it's great exercise walking, walking, trying on clothes, walking some more. Well, I have to run, time for the treadmill and more shopping at Macy's this time. My class reunion is tonight. 1000 people are going, it's mega reunion 1970 through 1979. Wooo Hooo.

Hello ky.hen,

I am really happy to hear that you are feeling so good after having the surgery. It really

helps because I was thinking that recovery time would take so much longer. I know everyone's

recovery time is probably different, but I am sure it helps to stay positive and you sure are a big

help making this journey more positive. I read your story and it was a great inspiration. I hope that my experience will go smoother by having all the support from everyone this forum. I am

glad to have you for a VSG friend. Keep up the good work!! I will keep up with your progress to see

how you are doing with your weight loss after having your surgery. I have been trying to get some

of my pictures posted on this forum, but I have only been able to get two of them on so far. With

some help, I may soon have the other pictures of myself and my family before surgery takes

place. After going through the photos to get the ones I wanted to post, I realize that I am not

making a mistake having this surgery. I could not believe how much bigger I appear in the pictures

than I perceive myself to be. I know that I am very overweight, but now I realize how much better

I will feel about myself if I have this surgery and get down to a normal weight. I have been big

most of my life, but I have been obese for 30 years or so. I am the same age as you are, so I am sure you know how I feel about wanting to do something before it is too late. I want the rest of my

years to be happier ones than the past 30 or so years have been.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR JOURNEY!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
