How long between eating and drinking?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious about how long people leave between eating and drinking?

This is the hardest part for me...i seem to always be thirsty. My nutritionist had to wait an hour after eating and stop 30 min before. I keep forgetting to ask the doc about what to do about my diabetes meds, which i am supposed to take with meals. I have been waiting the hour after meals to take them.

Thanks in advance!

Yes that's what we are supposed to do is wait at least two hours but I never did. I drink with my food and I'm almost three years out.

Originally, they used have all those drinking rules. They now know that food passes through the band in about a minute and actually shouldn't be digesting in the pouch at all. Because of this, the old theory that if you drink while you eat or immediately after washes the food through too fast is no longer valid. Now, many surgeons are changing their recommendations and allowing small sips with meals and immediately before/after eating.

But as always, it's best to follow your specific surgeon's instructions.

I was told 10 min before and 20 min after but I'm still on thick liquids so I haven't had to do that much :) it's gonna b hard for me too...good luck :)

I find this difficult at times as well. My instructions are that I can drink up until I eat. Then I am to wait 30-60 minutes after eating to drink again. I usually make 30 minutes but not much longer most of the time.

My doctor said 15 minutes before and 30-45 after eating. Hope this helps you!

Once again, we're all on different advice. Mine is drinks up until the first bite and then 1 hour after after eating. Small tiny sips are OK when necessary with food. Idk, works for me.

My surgeon says no liquids 30 mins before or after, my GI doctor says absolutely drink with your meals!!! I do happen to drink anyway!!!

I was told 30 min before and after and don't drink during meal. The reasoning I was given is that you want time before the meal because the liquid will still be in your pouch and cause the food you eat to swell and make eating difficult. For not drinking during or with in 30 min after, that is because it will cause the food to push through faster and you may eat too much.

That all said, like most, I don't follow that 100%. I wait 10-15 before and after meals. I typically don't drink during because for me, the liquid actually makes the food get stuck. I don't have to wait before but I definitely have to wait a few minutes after or else the liquid will come back up.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
