Greetings from the New Guy

Recommended Posts

I'm Scott. I'm from Statesville, NC, and my surgery is June 14th.

I'm 52-and-a-half and started out at 383 pounds. My diabetes had become largely uncontrolled, and weight loss surgery was strongly recommended by my internist.

I, truthfully, didn't think much beyond the Lap Band because I've got some hang-ups about having my anatomy rearranged.

My supporting cast includes my folks, my wife, four kids, and two grand kids. My oldest has concerns about a foreign object being implanted into my body. Given the poisons I've crammed into my system over the course of 35 years, I figure a little surgical composite and silicone would probably be a couple of the tamer things I've ever taken on.

I started my pre-op diet back on the 20th. I did ok, I reckon, for the first three days. Since then, I've been, pretty much, off the rails.

I have a very physically and mentally taxing job and being sick-hungry is not only unpleasant, but a distraction I cannot afford.

I have, however, managed to keep it together enough to lose ten pounds. That, one could say, is the good news.

I've one more day for any solid food. Friday is the beginning of a 100% liquid diet. Frankly, a good, old-fashioned apocalypse could be very timely right now.

My beloved bride has been very supportive and very patient. My two youngest have been quite patient also. They're in better shape than me.

Two weeks and counting...

I don't suppose bourbon is part of a liquid diet.

congratulations!!! The band is the best thing I have ever done for me. I can move better and I have 3 grandsons 6 months, 5 years and 13 years. Before the band, I wasn't so great for moving, like walking around a zoo. Now I can walk the whole zoo without resting every few hundred feet.

Having support at home is #1!!!!!!!!!!!! You have a wonderful wife. I have a wonderful husband, he even goes to my monthly support groups with me.

Welcome to the best site for learning and asking questions.

Congratulations! Keep chugging along and it'll be here before you know it. I chewed a lot of gum on my pre-op diet and drank a lot of black coffee.< /p>

A shot of tequila on a Friday night might be OK? I know it's worked for me. I'm sure bourbon could work for you too?

I'm not real hip to coffee, but I'll definitely give the gum thing a ride.

Thanks.

The pre op and initial post op times were the most challenging for me.

Remember that this is a journey, and not an event. This site has a wealth of information and positive support. The only dumb question is the one you want an answer to and do not ask...

Best wishes as you begin your journey...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
