Eating at Outback tomorrow with the family

Recommended Posts

Don't know what to order: I'm craving a steak and haven't had a steak in over a year because I'm scared of getting stuck on it. Their filet sounds good but I like it well done, then their salmon sounds good and of course I will give my salad to my mom, lord knows I can't eat all that, she eats the coconut shrimp, not sure what others will get. I may have to splurge and get a glass of sweet tea and drink one glass before I eat. OMGoodness I want a steak so bad, but I'm chicken, lol.

I just ate a small steak tonight. Top sirloin, well done and I just chewed. I didn't get stuck at all. I think medium well would have been fine, but anything less than that I don't think it would "crumble" as we'll while chewing. I say do it. Just chew.

My Wife loves Outback so we go there often.....I have stopped eating Red meat for over 2 years now, ever since getting in the Green Zone is has become difficult so I gave it up altogether...There have been many positive healthy benefits in doing so....and all my Dr.'s are pleased I did....they were always after me to do so....

But Outback IS a steakhouse......the chicken there is usually bad, too tough, overcooked, because that is not what they are known for....

So I usually start with a Soup, then a house salad of which I can only eat 1/3, if that, then some appetizer for my entree, such as a crab cake, or a few chicken wings.....

However, lately they have expanded their menu offering more seafood dishes.....not the best in the world, but at least it's something and they're trying.....

Then my wife will share her desert with me so I'll have a little of that to finish it off....

And of course, I have to start everything off with a adult beverage (or 2) before I eat anything......

Hi Donna,

They have an under 600 calorie menu - I always avoid shrimp as the tend to be to fibrous and get stuck. I rarely eat red meat but its not going to "hurt" anything now and then. I would do the sub 600 steak , slice thin n small chew well and not drink while eating - should be fine ; ) enjoy the people and being out and focus on that more than the food.

Why on earth would you "splurge" and drink sweet tea???? Zero nutrition value and spiking your blood stream with liquid sugar will likely mean that your brain will be screaming MORE MORE ... I suggest you find another way to splurge ... Just saying ; )

I love the ribeye at Outback. But I'm so far from slab meat......a good 10 months (per doctor's orders).

Donna - my first thought is, if you haven't had steak since being banded, might it be better to try it first at home, rather than out in a social situation? Unless the people you're eating with know your situation? If you eat as recommended by tiny bites chewed to oblivion, that you'll probably be okay. But if you should get stuck & have to deal with the slime and all the other gory details, are you going with be with a group that you're comfortable with? Just a thought......

Oops......never mind....scratch my question about eating out with people you're comfortable with. Guess I should have paid better attention to your header, which CLEARLY says "your family".

My surgeon actually gave great advice..

Order a steak closest to a filet mignon cause its the most tender and order on the rare side so it's less chewy.. Small bites and chewed for at least 30 seconds.. Then. 30 second break between bites!

I did just that at "longhorn steakhouse" and I was just fine!

thank you all for the input, great advice! I loved the "why on earth would I order sweet tea" and you are right, waste the calories on sugar in the sweet tea so I will get Water instead, thank you for the wake up call on that one. Just a Southern girl at heart with my sweet tea I guess, old habits break hard. I think I have made up my mind and am going with salmon and have a few bites of salad and pass that along to my mom. Thanks again everyone.

Depends on how tight you are! I had it there, medium rare and it was awesome. Small pieces and chew. I used a little ketchup or steak sauce to help. I only ate half of the 6 ounce portion. They have good brocolli too. Tell them no butter!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
