Question about Vomitting

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I am happy to say I was banded yesterday! Just feeling sore right now but no gas pains- happy about that. So, my question has to with my recovery yesterday. It didn't go as smoothly as expected.... All of the pain meds they gave through IV made me incredibly nauseas(even when coupled with Zofran)

The scary part is that I actually vomited yesterday while in the hospital. Sorry if TMI, but it was a little bloody. Of course this happened while in the hospital and my nurses and doctors were well aware. Before I left they ran lots of extra tests, including a barium swallow and in"ate" broth as well. I am no longer so nauseas. I guess I'm just nervous because I had read so many times you should never vomit and I'm scared that I did on the first day. I'm glad to have my docs reassurance, but just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how unusual it is. I'm just so afraid of a slip! Any thing you could share would be helpful!

Other than that everything is great and I'm so excited to finally be banded.

I had my band repositioned yesterday. I don't have any advice on the vomitting but perhaps we can keep track of each other to see how we are doing.

The blood was probably coming from the tube they put down your throat while sleeping. Its normal for wls patients to be nauseated when they wake up from surgery.

You are probably okay. If they released you and you can get the liquids down, don't worry. Relax, infact. But do start walking ASAP, it will he with the pain/gas. etc. Best wishes. Karen

I was very queasy when I woke up from surgery. I dry heeved several times......nurses were aware and just gave me more anti nausea meds. I was fine after I got home and didn't dry heeve again.

I know it's scary but try and relax. If your still super nervous....call your surgery team and ask questions.

If you are sipping and drinking your liquids easily....then I am sure things are fine.

Congrats on your new band!

I was dry heaving 3 days after surgery and had to go back into the hospital. I asked my surgeon if all the retching could've caused a band slip and he said that was very unlikely to happen so soon after surgery. I'm not sure why that is, but I'm now about a month post-op and doing great. Good luck.

The barium swallow was for them to make sure the band was still positioned properly. You're probably fine.

Thank you everyone- that makes me feel better. I have been reading this site since my pre-op first consult, even though I don't post much. I do not know anyone else who has a gastric band, so it's really been amazing and so helpful. Now that I have my band, I plan to post more often and maybe find a buddy that was banded at the same time. Thanks again!

I threw up for 3 days straight post op due to the anesthesia... all with my doc calling me everyday. I was readmitted on day 3 for dehydration... but doctor assured me too that band that soon after surgery was OK.. I was just swollen and the throwing up made it worse till I couldn't pass anything.. so the more ice/water sips I tried.. I threw up more. Long story short.. I agree with the others that 1 or 2 times post op you should be OK and since your doc did a Barium and checked it... he wouldn't have let you go if it had. I also have had a few stuck episodes and threw up and a stomach bug with throwing up... last check for fill under fluoroscopy . band was in place and doing it's job like a champ. I'm down 50 lbs in 4 months!!!

Good luck on your journey...

the posters before my post gave excellent advice......let me say, if scared or concerned, always refer to your doctor.

I had trouble with vomiting as well first in hospital and then because I was eating too fast. Now I've slowed down and haven't been sick. I also take medication for nausea and digestion which I have been doing for a month . I now take it as needed. It does get better and if it persist call your doctor immediately

Thanks everyone. I was only feeling scared because I thought "no one" ever vomited while still in the hospital. My dr is great and he put me at ease with his thorough testing. I probably would be scared if he didn't go through all he did to make sure everything was in the right place. My nausea has not come back and I've been doing excellent on post op stage 1 diet. I really appreciate people responding!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
