Is there anyone that doesn't get fills

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering if there is anyone that has never had a fill. I just had surgery and they had to take my fill out because swallowing was hard. Will I gain weight now? What will happen?

My doctor half filled my band during surgery it's only a small band though like 6cc. I find I can eat everything slowly with little difficultly, so I probably won't get a fill when I see my dr on the 20th of feb.

Also I don't think if you get an unfill you will gain, your bands too tight you need to be able to eat the right foods. If your bands too tight instead of eating Protein and vegetables you'll have to resort to slider foods which don't give u the same sense of fullness. So in my opinion an unfill will assist in your weight loss not hinder it :)

My fill was only 3.2 but I guess I was swollen from the surgery and that is why they took it all out. I don't know what happens next.

Some people just need less fill to get to restriction. You may find you're one of those people. If they unfilled you, it's not the end of the world. You're no less worse off than most people for whom that first 'primer' fill doesn't even touch the sides.

This will let you heal and eventually when you do, you'll be able to tell if you're still too tight (which I doubt). Then if you're eating more, you can get a fill again. It's too early to tell if you've just had surgery.

I have read of a few people for whom more fills after surgery wasn't required. The band itself and whatever was put in at the time of surgery gave them enough restriction to lose the weight. But for most people, it takes a few fills, and for someone like me, it takes a LOT of fills to get there. It'll all play out over the next few months how the band will work for you.

I know two people here who's not had fills yet and both are doing amazing. Carolinagirl had a band with plication and has never had a fill and Pattygirl (no plication) has never had a fill. Both women are losing extremely well. In both their cases, they simply don't need one yet.

They are proof that weight loss absolutely nothing to do with fills but rather calories burned versus calories consumed.

i dont have a fill but i eat as though i do...

i am very aware of what i eat (the type foods) and the amounts.

i know 3500 cals is a pound...and because i am not a marathon runner, i am careful to not take in more cals then i burn off..i also stop eating at 1 cup of food and i eat lean Protein, veggies and fruit. if i eat it, its gonna be filling.

as missy stated, you eat over 3500 cals a day and dont burn it off, you will gain or not lose..fill or no fill...just my opinion.

The best advice I have learned from my fellow bandsters is the golden rule - that is never to eat more than a cup of food per meal, no matter what! Get in that protein! Oh, and the thing that helps me overall is to track everything I eat and exercise. I cannot live without these rules, ever!

Now if we don't get fills do we still have restriction? I wonder why I went through the surgery if I don't have that restriction. Do you feel satisfied?

It depends completely on your anatomy and band size. Some people (like Pattygirl and Carolinagirl) have their hunger dimmed great without a fill. Then there's others that feel like they don't have a band at all when their band is empty.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with fills- or not getting fills. It's all a matter of personal necessity based on your own anatomy.

speaking for me, absolutely...my dr put primer in, i have no idea how much and i have plication...those 2 combined give me restriction...at 1 to 1 1/2 cup, it is 100% clear i am restricted...to the point of uncomfortable...why i stop at 1 cup....i let the band work..its not magic..i dont expect the band to do everything....my dr told me for this to work i have to let it work and help it by eating my allotted amounts and good quality foods.

Once I healed from surgery, I didn't feel restriction until I had 6cc in my band, and didn't get into the green zone until I had 8.5cc in my band (10cc band). I have had up to 10cc in my band in the last year (to counteract the effects of a leak) and I could still eat solids.

I completely believe in getting restriction. That's how the band works best. Once I got to the green zone, I didn't have to do anything to lose. All my exercise was incidental, and the Portion Control my band gave me was enough not only to help me get well below my goal weight, but also to maintain it for 3 years.

When I lost restriction due to a stubborn leak, I have put weight back on for the first time in 3 years, so I know that restriction was what was keeping my weight under control. Now I diet, count calories, do low carb, exercise formally, all things I didn't have to do when I was in the green zone just to keep from gaining any more.

So the band does give you that added boost to help you control hunger if it's used to it fullest potential. But how many fills you have to get to get there is completely individual.

Wozzicat,

I feel restriction most deffinately, my band lets me know when I have either eaten to much, too fast, to big of a bite, (I get discomfort) when doing any of these mentioned. My band puts me right in check! I also feel satisfied after a meal for long periods of time until my next one. I am not sure how long my restriction will continue on my journey, but for now its working....

I was banded on November 6th and my doctor did it put in any Fluid during surgery. I have not had a fill so far and have lost a little over 45 pounds. I don't think I have restriction but I am not hungry. I eat 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food per meal and focus on Protein first. I have three meals a day and don't snack in between meals. My average calories is about 1000 per day. Down two pant sizes since November and feel great!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
