I'm new to the site. I was banded in April 2010. Starting weight was 272. Total lost is 70 lbs. Goal weight is 155. I found this site because I feel like I need more support. I am married and have 2 kids. My husband is usually supportive but he doesn't want me to get any fills or to go to the gym. He wants me to do it all on my own and not use my band or even the gym as a crutch. I enjoy going to the gym and it really helps me deal with stress. I know that I am an emotional eater and when I get stressed, I always used sweets as a comfort. This fall has been pretty stressful and busy at work and I have been feeling overwhelmed. I haven't been taking care of myself. So, I've slipped back into old habits and I'm feeling pretty down about it. Any advice or support would be helpful.

I guess the first question I would have is why your husband is holding you back. It is your band and your body, if you want to get fills or go to the gym, can you? Or does that create further stress?

I would start by going back to the basics and start tracking...........tracking always tells part of the story.

Good luck.

I think you need to talk to your husband and expalin to him why you need to use your band and the gym. Its your life, your health etc. I know its hard to do but you went through the surgery and that was the biggest step. I know when I was younger I took my kids to the school and walked around the field why they played.

Time for a very honest discussion with your husband. And not about the band. It makes no sense that he doesn't want you to go to the gym. If you don't exercise how else will you lose weight? Then once he understands exercise is necessary for you then have discussions about the band and how it's supposed to work. But overall your husband shouldn't dictate what actions you take to get healthy. And I say healthy not thin. Hope I don't sound harsh just wanted to be short and to the point. Best of luck!

He does understand that exercise is important. He wants me to exercise at home. I've gotten Zumba DVDs and P90X DVDs to use at home. I think it might be an insecurity issue on his part. Or it could just be a control issue. I think I just need to work on my assertiveness and stand up for myself.

My thought is you don't have to go to a gym to get exercise. Take the kids for a walk, ride bikes do workout video's.

Now the fills are a different story. Do you not have the extra money for fills, or is husband just being controling? If you have the money, I'd just do it. The band can't help you if it isn't working properly.

This is about your health , tell hub it was a total waste of thousands of dollars, not working with the band.

Congratulations on the weight loss so far!

Good luck!

I think you're right!

You need your fills to be successful! You have to do this to be heathy for yourself first and than your hubby and children. I explained to my husband this was something that I had to do for me. I'm being selfish with health and fitness!

I dont want to sound harsh. But you have to do what is right for you. You look pretty young and I just wish I had done this 20 years ago and would have had more energy for my kids. They are now grown. So keep up the good work!!!

The whole reason for the band is to give you help. You need to work with your band.. get Fills and go to the Gym otherwise there was no point. Maybe hubby is feeling a bit insecure so isnt as encouraging as you would like.

Your exercise regimen is crucial. It should not matter if you exercise at home or the gym..whatever makes you comfortable and motivated. I really don't understand him not wanting you to go to the gym. Is it because of the cost of a gym membership? Anyway, get to the bottom of that with him so you can get your workout on! Best Wishes

I made an appointment for a fill. I got the P90X DVDs and I am going to try them out at home. I will work on the hubs and try to get him on the same page.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
