Shakes Or No Shakes?

Recommended Posts

I have never been a fan of shakes...none...not even the yummy ones from DQ or McDonalds ;) I tolerated them while on my preop and into my first week or so post op. I see alot of people on here are still using Protein Powder or shakes, should I be doing this? I get plenty of Protein in a day, anywhere from 60-80grams from greek yogurt, chicken, turkey and lots of Beans. I am kind of on a Chili kick. lol Am I good? I really hate the idea of drinking shakes, thus my reason for upping my protein in solid form. Please, any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

My dr doesn't advise them once you start on solid foods. He says he prefers I get my Protein form food not drinks because they are not going to fill you up like food does. It's his opinion but so far it's worked for me.

no, you don't need Protein Shakes or powder if you are eating your recommended amount of Protein per day. I was told that I should be eating not drinking my protein. I do have an Optifast every so often in place of Breakfast but that is the exception not the rule. I do not own protein powder or any protein suppliments...........can't stomach them.

My doc says the same thing. I have still been doing them for breakfast. It's a good on the go thing for me.

Protein Shakes are just liquid calories that do not keep you full. After you start eating regular food there is no need for shakes. Even at breakfast with a tight band you can manage some greek yogurt. The only time I would drink shakes is after a fill when I had to depend on liquids for the first 24 hours. Other then that heck no to the shakes.

No more shakes once you are on solids unless you need to do liquids after fills, illness, stuck episodes, etc.

The band is designed to work with solid foods passing through the band and that squeezing motion is what triggers the sensors in that area to tell your brain you are no longer hungry. Liquids are sliders and don't trigger the desired effect.

I really like this post. I have met so many people on this site who have more shakes than they eat solids. If I say something the all get mad and say I think I know everything. Not the case I just worry that they are too full and will cause other problems.

I still do a shake periodically for breakfast on the go. I have spoken to my clinic about this and 2 of the girls who work there are banded and they do the same. I think it is the exception not the rule and I would much rather eat than drink, just sometimes for the sake of time and convenience, I fall back on my Optifast.< /p>

I have Greek yogurt with half scoop Protein powder with 1/2 cup high protein Cereal for breakfast at 10. I only have shakes after a fill or occationally before workouts. If I eat lunch at 12 I have a long time before dinner (8-9). I've moved breakfast to 10 so I can move lunch to 2; so the time until dinner is less.

My doc says no more shakes now that I am on solid food but I find it hard to tolerate much else in the morning so I still have one in the morning just to supplement! But i don't hate them either :)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
