Recommended Posts

Ok I will admit while I don't miss soda I miss an occasional beer. Do any of you indulge?

I avoid carbonation... but I don't care for beer. I know some do, but my doc says no.

I never had a problem with beer...except that I couldn't drink as much as I used to...just a couple and I was down for the count. I would drink them rather slow.

yes, I've had a beer. Really fills you up but no problem other then that.

I think the biggest concern is empty calories.

My dr forbids carbonation of any kind. So its off my list of things I think about. I will have wine instead.... but rarely

I was shocked - SHOCKED - when I met with my surgeon last time and he said that carbonation was perfectly fine but it may cause some discomfort. I was asking him about taking Airborne or Emergen-C for a cold I felt coming on, since it's fizzy I didn't want to risk anything. He said that he feels it's one of those "rules" that surgeons put out there because nothing carbonated is good for you, even diet soda isn't healthy and most times will lead to increased appetite for salt.

I honestly put my fingers in my ears and said "lalalala - don't tell me this". If my brain knows something is off limits, I don't even crave it...I told him that a diet soda was a slippery slope for me, so I'll just keep believing that it can do damage.

I have heard others say their surgeons say the same. In fact, I have an aunt with the band and her surgeon allows her carbonation, too.

I honestly don't know what is true, I only know I'm personally terrified to touch it. When I was being banded, my roommate in the hospital was in there because her band slipped and she needed a new band. Her stomach actually prolapsed up through the band. She told me it slipped because she was regularly drinking soda and told me to "learn from her mistake and never touch carbonation". She also gained back 40 pounds, too.

I never forget her and or her story. It was enough to scare me out of ever touching carbonation again.

I think I read on here that carbonated drinks make a person burp a ton. If you really want a beer, try a Guiness? Don't think that is carbonated. Also not sure if it's worth all the calories. I'd go with Rayanne's apply vodka peach concoction instead :-)

My Dr says the same as Jen_1381s. That carbonation is fine if it doesn't cause you discomfort. I drink a light beer or ginger beer occasionally. I drink champagne - please don't tell me that's not good for me, I won't believe you.I drink soda Water with a dash of lime in summer as it is really refreshing etc etc

I do not drink it in excess and I do not have issues.

The supposed rule though about not drinking it is so entrenched that some people really believe that soda will cause everything from slips, to AIDS to the fall of Babylon!

As with most things I believe that moderation is the key.

Ya... the whole carbonation thing is a debate in its self. I had a beer or two at the lake this summer. Saddly, it doesn't taste as good as it used to. I found it was usually an accessorie that I discarded at the end of the night! :) I guess with the different views on carbonation it is a choice you will have to make. I have had very little since my banding, what I have had has not caused any issues. Honestly... don't miss it.

My surgeon has never said anything about carbonation but I gave up soft drink anyway and I truly don't miss it all. I will have an occasional light beer when out dancing, but tap beer is virtually flat and I easily dance off the calories of a light!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
