Recommended Posts

I I am in week 2 of post-surgery (thick liquids) and I am craving McDonald's French fries! These desires are what helped me get obese. How do I get through these cravings?

Drink something, go for a walk, have more Soup, go to bed............the phrase my clinic used that cleared me of any cravings was..........'you don't want to pop a stitch' - yikes.

I always told myself that I didn't want to do anything to cause problems with my surgery. Reading all the bad things that have happened to people kept me in line. I have never had a stuck episode, slimmed or had PB. I am always to scared of something happening to my band that I am over cautious. It has worked or me!

Find something else to either occupy your time or satisfy the craving. Tomato Soup worked for me!

Really think how you could possibly blow something you've worked hard for.

Have some SF pudding.< /p>

Don't do it!!! I made the mistake of getting fast food not too long ago. I could not handle the fries. Got stuck and had to vomit. So not worth it! I should have known better but whenever I crave something I go for it :(

Just remember, you're not even on solid foods again yet. You're on liquids. The reason you're on liquids is to give your stomach time to heal. Eating food too soon can cause major complications.

It's simply not worth the risk. Stick to your post op diet.

Ask yourself the following question. Is 5 minutes of eating French fries worth compromising my band and my health? If the answer is yes..... which I bet it wont ...then go ahead and eat them. But the fact that you posted the question tells me you are thinking about your choices which is a great thing.

I had post it notes on my computer, my dash, my mirrors...for the first few months u til I got restriction.... Whenever I got the urge I would look at them and think... I really don't want it... I want it because I cannot have it.

And as a side note I was about a year out and hubby and I were on a road trip and he drove thru McDonalds... I got a grilled chicken salad and thought... I just want one french fry. So I ate it... It was the first grease I'd eaten in a year. 5 minutes later he was pulling over so I could get rid of it. My band rejected it BIG time.

I suffer from actual cravings as well as emotional hunger. You, you're only 2 weeks post-op, you have a world to lose if you give at this point.

Later, through your journey, you'll find cheating on rare occassions won't be as dangerous as it would be now.

I like to eat at night, so I do these things...log onto LBT and find that you're not alone and can always ask for help, I took to crocheting this massive blanket (not enough yarn, ahhh!...to keep my hands busy, read an inspirational book, go on Facebook, play with my babies (cats and dog). It only works some of the time, I'll give in to a healthy snack like fruit, yogurt, etc.

But I can most certainly relate to your craving! especially since your diet is so restricted right now. You automatically want what you cannot have. Create coping skills, use them and move on.

Good Luck!

Hang in there! We have all been there with you. I like the distraction method. Usually I find that I was not really hungry, just bored. The initial phases are the toughest, because we need to re-learn good eating habits. You can do!

How about some mashed potatoes? It's not quite the same, but maybe the taste of potato will help??

sounds like you are just hungry.

how about eating a healthier Protein snack instead of starchy potatoes (mashed or french fries)

if hungry eat (but if you are on liquids, soft, you need to focus on your Protein shakes or even soft filling foods. Protein will help you get full and feel full.

cravings. we all got them.

but its the choices we make that either keep us obese or get healthier.

up to me.

and its up to you.

My guess would be you are craving salt more than the fries. Some times our bodies will make us crave something not because we want that, but because we want something that is in it.

Try some mashed potatos made using chicken broth rather than Water or milk- add a little cheese and salt. This may curb that craving.

During the mushy stage when I got extremely hungry I would just eat a bit of yogurt or something and go to sleep- when I woke up the craving would have disapated.

I just wanted to add that for me if I eat crap I will crave and crave and crave it. Drink Water to flush your system and hang in there. This is the time you lay down the path for your future. Hang in there.

I am on day 4 postop and have had a few cravings, but, I do not want to get sick. I still have the traveling gas that moves about inside my chest cavity and causes me to stop what I'm doing until it subsides, so painful. I have been drinking lots of Water, no sugar tea, sf popcicles, sf jello.... I would love to have something like really mush soft refried Beans, or mushy something.... but according to my instructions I still have a week to go on liquids. Honestly, not sure if I can make it another week without something mushy..... suggestions?? Please and thank you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
