Feedback On Plication With Band.

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out pros and cons for plication with band. I postponed surgery to get plication with lapband. I need to let my surgeon know Monday if this is what I want. Any feedback? Thank you!

I really don't know much about the Lapland. But I would highly recommend checking out the plication board. I know one major reason people choose the band is because it is considered reversible. The plication surgery was originally thought to be a way to make the sleeve reversible, however this is not proving to be the case.

I wanted to get the plication along with the band, but my surgeon didn't think i needed it. He said plication with the band is only for people who couldn't exercise and needed that extra "oomph"

Also, there is not enough research long term for plication, so insurance won't cover it and they sometimes wont even cover the band if they get the surgical report and see you got plicated. It's more risky and not necessary for some people

I got the band with plication done in late May. I've had no problems. I was self pay and it did cost more. My weight loss has slowed and I'm getting my 2nd fill next week.

I'm new to all of this; so I'm not familiar with the terminology. What exactly is "plication"?

plication= folding over, so the surgeon will literally fold your stomach inside to reduce its volume and make it look like a sleeve without any removal of the stomach

Ok...thank you for the explanation. I hadn't heard about this since I am at the beginning stages. I appreciate it!

It seems like, and I may be wrong, that gastric plication basically achieves the same purpose as the gastric sleeve. (And I'm talking about without the additional banding part). If that is the case, why aren't people who are opting to get the gastric sleeve just get gastric plication instead? Isn't it much safer since the stomach is being folded over rather than cut?

I had plication with lapband on 8/10. I did it because it seemed like a tool within a tool to me and I thought I could use the extra help. I'm only 8 days post op so can't say if it is helping. My surgeon said that the early data shows better weight loss but that there is no data showing if improves anything in the long run. I was self pay and paid $1800 more.

Yes I agree with you, but i think plication is newer so there is not yet as much research on it, which is why people are more hesitant

But yes, it seems to me that its a great sleeve alternative for those afraid of cutting out parts of their stomach

I had lap band with plication about 3 months ago and I think it has made a huge difference for me because I never went through "bandster hell". I still only have .5cc in my band and I'm losing 10 to 12 pounds a month and don't really feel like I need a fill at the moment. I am so glad I got it.

Well I guess the technology for all WLS will just get better and better. Unfortunately, I didn't want to wait. I kind of wish I had the option of plication with my gastric band, because there doesn't seems to be any additional negatives, just the possibility of more positives. However, I would not have been covered by insurance, and I just couldn't take on the financial burden. I have no complaints so far, but it would be nice to have that extra edge that the plication seems to offer.

Yep I feel the exact same way!

You literally took the words out of my mouth.

But one thing is for sure: I'm glad i didn't wait. I really need to lose the weight and to keep living morbidly obese is not good for me socially, mentally or physically

I had the sleeve, and tbh, plication scares the heck out of me. One of the main reasons I went with the sleeve is because of the super low rate of complications. While looking into plication I found too many cases where the folded over stomach lost blood flow and had to be removed. Also the sutures on the plicated stomach tend to migrate the final nail in the coffin for me was when I learned that plication, originally thought to be reversible, was proving not to be. All of this and then plication by itself does not produce the weightloss that the sleeve does.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
