4 Months Post Op 5 Fills 10 Lbs Lost ..am I Failing

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I want to start to off by saying I work out everyday 2 miles walking and weights included, i use my fittness pal every day and a super dedicated to it and keep my self on a 1200 colorie diet or less. This past monday I had my 5th fill to 4.6cc I have lost a total of 10lbs since my surgery on 3/23/2012. I am not sure what to do or what is happening because it seems the weight is just not comming off fast enough. I am so concerned that the band may not work for me. I know its a tool and dont expect it to do all the work and I put in the work to do what I am supposed to be doing.

Are there any slow loosers out their that can offer support or insight as to what i can do to help my band work more with me. My doctor says I cant have another fill for another month and i think he needs to be more agressive. All my fills have been under fluroscope and there are no leeks or issues with the band from what we can see. Now the funny thing is my doctor showed me a picture of my stomach and said it is unusaly small and thats why its taking so many fills to get me to restrictoin. Has anyone heard of this before.

Any help or guidance you can offer would be most apprecaited.

Thank you,

I'm a slow loser as well but just think of it as part of my journey. I keep my focus on the goal and know I'll get there. It is hard not to compare yourself to others but I would follow your doc's order and not give up.

Please get a upper GI from your Dr. I am now on my second band. I did everything right the first time around and also lost very little weight.

It took an upper GI to show that my buckle wasn't connected. That is when I had my second surgery. Now I am losing weight. Slowly, but surely, the weight IS coming off.

There are problems with the band that are mechanical. Please have your Dr. check it out.

My self-esteem took a real blow during all of this. I had told everyone I was having surgery and then didn't lose weight.

If it is mechanical, you need to get it fixed NOW. If it isn't a mechanical problem, the Dr. can help there too. Bands can fail thru not fault on our own.

Let me know how you are doing.

((((HUGS))))

Terry

Puppypaws, thanks for the information. Can you please tell me if the upper GI could see something that the fulorsope would not catch. Each of my fills are done under flurscope and my doctor says it looks fine and has good placement. I have a little restriction but wish he would be more agressive based on my slow loss.

Hi - I think it is the same thing. But you still may have something wrong with your band. Don't give up! It took me almost a year. My Dr. said "There is nothing more that I can do for you. You need to see a psychatrist". Actually, I would like to have counseling for my eating disorder. But you also see - there was something wrong with the surgery that was done.

Don't give up!!!!

I'm a slow loser. You are not alone. Do not beat yourself up!

Be good to yourself. Go for all the need to's, like drink your Water, take a daily Vitamin, Protein every morning and exercise. It WILL get better.

Talk to the doctor and nutritionist too. You definitely don't want to take any chances with your health.

Puppypaws, I am seriously considering asking my surgeon to check and make sure everything is connected properly. I have only lost 12lbs to date, and when I see the NP, she acts like if I'm not losing, then I don't need a fill. I am not saying that if I am eating wrong that I don't need to be mindful of that, but when I come in crying that I never feel full, and that something just doesn't feel right, shouldn't I as the consumer, have the right to question and ask for a fill?

Yes. The Dr. works for YOU! You hired him to do your surgery, etc., etc.

I KNOW how frustrating this is for you. If you aren't losing then you definetly need a fill. I wouild ask the surgeon to check everything out and also tell him how the NP is acting.

There is a reason for all this and the Dr., his office and you should all be working together to find out what is wrong.

Good luck and keep me posted. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

My surgery was also at end of March but I got 4mls in my band at time of surgery(by my first fill it has reduced to 3.5mls). I've lost but wasn't good last month and loss was minimal. I put off ringing the dietician as I kept thinking I will do better tomorrow... When I finally spoke to one of the team she just said it showed I was ready for my next fill. All that guilt and she shrugged it off!!!! I had my 4th fill one week ago which has taken me to 6.85mls in a 10mls band and wow!! I have restriction. ( I had been told it happens around 7mls or at 70% capacity if band is bigger). I can only eat 2inches of a banana in one go( I'm sad, I measured) and am experimenting again with what I can eat.

As per my norm I have dry Cereal in the morning, chicken salad for lunch and vary my evening meal. 6 weeks ago I could still have eaten a Sunday roast!!

Hope you weight loss kicks in properly soon. We can't help compare ourselves to others, I think it's human nature. I have a friend who still hasn't achieved 14lbs loss after 12months and another friend who has lost 70lbs since surgery Feb12- both have bands.

xxx

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
