Don't Sell Yourself Short - How Much Have You Really Lost

Recommended Posts

I often read threads in this forum where people are disappointed with their weight loss. People compare themselves to others and feel that their loss is not good enough or not fast enough.

Apart from the fact that everyone is different and their body is different people often forget to look at things such as starting weight. Someone that weighs more will initially lose weight a lot more quickly than someone who does not weigh as much. As people get closer to their goal weight the loss slows down and it gets harder.

So instead of focussing on the number of lbs or kgs or stones lost rather look at the percentage of your body weight that you have lost.

For example a person weighing 400lb may drop 100lb very quickly. That is a fantastic achievement, but lets look at it another way they have lost 25% of their body weight. Another person may have "only" lost 60lb. Lets say their starting weight was 290lb - that is almost 21% - still amazing.

So why not do the calculation and see how much you have really lost. It may make you feel heaps better.

My stats.

Starting weight 74kg or 163lb

Lowest weight 50 kg or 110lb

Total lost 24 kg or 53lb

Percentage of weight lost 32%

This is true, and a great way to look at it. There are other factors besides the scale (although it's a good way to judge your continuing progress and prevent you from getting off track too much), such as clothing size as well. Congrats on your great weight loss too!

How do u calculate the percentage? I'm was banded may 31 and lost 19lbs. My goal is to lose 100 but instead of saying I only lost 19 lbs I say only 81 to go. I feel like I just keep getting closer to my goal and every lb loss counts

You need your starting weight as we are calculating a percentage of the weight we were initially, then you divide the amount lost by the starting weight.

So mine was 24 divided by 74 = 32.432 .

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
