What Can I Expect After The Band????

Recommended Posts

I'm getting banded this Thursday 6/28 and I was wondering if you can help...

After surgery what can I expect the pain to be like?

What will happen if I go to a Mexican food resturant again someday with my family what can I expect to eat? what about a Chinese food resturant?

What can I expect to eat in the weeks, months to follow. I have been doing so much research but I feel I am not prepared ( I actually am) but my mind is racing.

I am getting nervous and anxious about the surgery but it has been a long time waiting so I am ready.

Thanks for any and all help!!!

congrats on your up coming surgery. everyone's pain tolerance is different and i'm a big baby so i was in a lot of pain, but only when i got up or down from the couch or when i moved around. it gradually got better. the first 2 days were the worstk but i'd do it again in a heart beat.

as far as what you can eat, that may vary from day to day. the band is not really black and white, especially after you start getting fills, one day you can eat something and the very next day you cant

as far as eating out.. i never eating anything outside, that i havent tried inside the house, just because i dont want any surprises..lol

being nervous is totally natural.

i hope you have someone that can help you the first few days to move around.

feel free to PM with anyother questions.

You're getting ahead of yourself with the food. I did the same thing and it just drove me nutty. I would stick strictly with your doc or nutritionists plans for at least the first month. Then little by little you can venture into new territory.

Ps: there is a section on this site called surgery day stories. I liked reading those so you know what to expect.

You can go to any restaurant. I found it easier in the beginning to scope out menu before we go so I would know what to order. I eat Chinese, Mexican, Italian, etc. I have trouble with beef that is tough - sirloin steak is off menu.

Pain sucks after surgery. A heating pad and stronger pain meds will help.

Initial foods sucked for me. Lots of lima Beans, mashed potatoes and soft meats.

My biggest concern pre-surgery was that I wouldn't be able to eat bread. The weird thing is I don't crave bread like I used to and I can eat, but not much and very slowly when I do.

Wishing you the best.

I was banded on may 31st. I was the 1st surgery 1st thing in the am. Mine went really good. I felt fine except for being a little sleepy from surgery. By 5 I was feeling fine. I just felt really tight not really pain. I took pain pills for 2 nights & the ibuprofen was all I needed. The biggest problem for me was the gas pain from the air they put in your body for the procedure. That lasted about a week but was super uncomfortable. Walking & a heating pad was essential.

I've been able to eat most things in moderation. Beef & rice are the exception. They dont sit well. Since Chinese food is mostly rice I've stayed away from that. I eat alot of Mexican food, mostly bean/cheese burrito & chicken quesadilla. Very small portions always need a box. You'll know what to eat as time goes on. Take it slow.

Congratulations. You'll do great.

There are several phases of your journey. Let's just rule out the first 30-45 days as you wil have to eat what your doctor or nutritionist has detailed for you I assume?

You will be in "bandster hell" for a month or more if you are like most of us. You can eat whatever you want but you better eat less of it if you want to lose weight. Once you get that fill that moves you into the "Green Zone" you can still eat whatever you want or whatever your band will tolerate. No one can tell you what you can eat because we are all different and there really is no norm or standard for people who have the band. About the only food that we many of us find hard to eat is dry chicken, steak or pork. That's why the nutritionists dwell on gettig enough Protein.

You will develop this love/hate relationship with your band and only you will communcate with your band. Your band relationship will be unique to just you. As one other forum member put it, you will be an expert with your own band. Good luck, hope to see your posts again soon.

What about pancakes and waffles (of course no butter and light syrup) have you tried them?

I have one pancake a week. I do put a small amount of butter and regular Syrup (low sugar stuff sucks). If I am going to have a treat. I have a treat. It is however my bread for the week.

If I go to a mexican place (pretty rare) I have chicken fajita's no wrap. I have'nt been to chinese in about a year. Again if I'm having chinese I consider it a "cheat day" and enjoy myself. I'm at restriction so I can't eat like I used to anyway.

I had a pancake today. Only could eat 1/2 & it was fine. Soft foods are fine for me. Beef is horrible. Just not tender enough.

The best advice I got before surgery was get a heating pad & I'm glad I did.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
