Waking Up In The O.r????

Recommended Posts

I keep reading about people waking up while still in the operating room, that has me freaked out.

I have had surgery before, 4 to be exact, and I have always woken up in the recovery room.

Some people have said they woke up and still had the tube in their mouth/throat...why?

I am really nervous about that, just the thought of it is making me queasy now!

After you're prepped for surgery you will meet the anesthesiologist, and have the chance to ask questions. You should be totally fine but don't be afraid to voice your concerns. I don't even remember being knocked out.. LOL! By the time you wake up in recovery your breathing tube will be out.

Yes, relax, this is a RARE occurance that no anesthesiologist ever wants to happen! I don't even remember being knocked out, the nurse gave me a little shot of something (can't remember what it was called) and all I remember was giving my cell phone to my husband- then waking up in the recovery room!!! You'll be fine.

Ive had brain surgery , gallbladder , 2 csections, knee surgery , hand surgery , the band , a port redo , and a hysto and donated a kidney , never not one time have i woke up in surgery . I think it is depending on what type of surgery sometimes they dont put people under as far depending on the time they alot for the surgery . Sooooooo relax and get excited , if you ponder all the what ifs its just gonna cause stress your gonna do great and have a life time of success ahead of you :) If you catch your self thinking about it simply try to focus on your after surgery recovery making sure the house is tidy , you have everything youll need at home during recovery and tieing up lose ends . Sending prayers your way :)

the reason some people wake up during procedures is that their bodies metabolize the anesthesia faster and so what would be a normal dose for someone of their specific weight/height is not correct. This is an extremely, extremely rare occurence.

Stop worrying about these kinds of things or you will drive yourself batty!

Sissy, you'll do fine. I would voice your concerns to the anesthesiologist but aside from that, if you've had four surgeries previously without complication, then you should be fine. Lots of prayers your way of course. I made the mistake of watching a YouTube live surgery - which freaked me out but kind of intrigued me. I think I'll ask if I can have a video of the surgery, just to be weird. But come on, how many people get to see what their insides look like without having something terrible happen?! Sorry - back on track, You WILL do fine. The more you think about it the worse it will be. So focus all your energy on your pre op diet, exercise and looking forward to meeting your first goal! Good Luck Sissy, I can't wait to hear how everything went - I think your surgery is the day before mine! :D

Thanks!!!

I actually watched a video of the surgery when I met my Dr. and it actually re-assured me, the fact that the incisions are so small and that there is NO cutting of my stomach is awesome.

I also loved how there was practically no blood, I'm a big sissy girl when it comes to that stuff, and I thought it was great to watch it :)

Thanks for the prayers!

Not to freak you out, but I woke up on the operating table with the tube still down my throat. So it definitely can happen. I had voiced my concerns with the anesthesiologist, because the only other surgery I had before lap band was my wisdom teeth, where they put me under general anesthesia. I woke up twice during my wisdom teeth surgery and it was very scary.

When I woke up from my lap band surgery, I started freaking out-- they pulled the tube out of my throat which was AWFUL, and then I heard them count to 3 and then lifted me over to the stretcher to bring me to the recovery room. At the time, I thought that the surgery was still going on and I was apparently yelling at my surgeon and asking him why I was still awake during surgery (especially because it had been a huge concern of mine).

I think most people wake up in the recovery room and already have some pain meds in them. I did not and I was in a LOT of pain. It finally subsided a bit when they got some meds in me.

Again, I don't mean to freak you out, but it can happen. Good luck!

I woke up during a cardiac procedure. The first anesthesiologist was sitting in front of my face and was watching for any signs of alertness, but when they switched (the ablation ended up taking 5 hours) the second one sat at the top of my head. I was awake for 5 minutes, felt everything (they had guidewires from my groin and neck going into my heart), but I knew that I could NOT move so I just calmly tried to breathe and not scream. As soon as I felt the doctors had ease up on my neck I told them I was awake and the anesthesiologist hurridly re-sedated me, and moved to see my face.

Keep in mind though, they were using MAC (moderate) sedation. For the lap band, they use a general anesthesia. They can't use a MAC on any type of abdominal surgery because the CO2 they use to inflate your abdomen will cause too much pressure on the diaphragm and you would be uncomfortable. I made SURE before surgery that the anesthesiologist was using a general, which he said they always do.

Waking up during my cardiac ablation was by far the scariest thing I've ever been through....but it was fascinating to watch!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
