So maybe I'm just being impatient because i feel like I have been going through this Pre surgery stuff forever. It's only been a month haha. I had my 1st surgeon appt... Passed. Had my psych eval... Passed. Had physical therapy eval... Passed. Tons of labs, EKG, chest X-ray done. Had nutrition eval today and she wants to follow up in 5 weeks!! Ugh that's forever. And she gave me a paper to go get Vitamin D supplements. She asked me what I ate yesterday and based on that she told me I'm not getting nearly enought Protein or Vitamin D and I need to eat MORE calories!!! What!!!

Also the dietitian and surgeon and trying to talk me into the sleeve and now I'm second guessing myself. She said I needed to be on the vitamin d supplements for 10 weeks omg!

Ughhhh

its not necessarily that you need to increase calories, but that you need to be aware of the nutritional breakdown in the foods you eat and make choices with that in mind. Most of us eat 800-1200 and get 70g+ Protein per day.

Are they perscription Vitamin D? I've been taking over the counter for at least a year. Also keeping in mind I take a multi and my Calcium has added D. Soooo I'm getting a lot of Vitamin D. I also live in NE and unless it's the 4th of July we don't get that much sun.

What is your current calorie intake? I've read people on here who are at 500-600 cals after they are healed. That is just not enough calories to be healthy. I don't see how they are getting all their solid Protein AND fruit and veggies in. And if you aren't getting your nutrition from food you would need to get it from suppliments.

Well the dietitian was shocked how well I eat. I don't eat fast food. I graze but on fruits and veggies. salad is my favorite thing. I only eat fat free ice cream, milk, cheese, etc for years. Yes the Vitamin d is over the counter. I told her a normal day for me is 2 cups milk and fruit in am, a salad and maybe a sandwich or wrap or Soup for lunch and a Pasta for dinner. With Snacks of tomatoes, carrots and fat free ranch somewhere in there. She was kinda suprised. She said I know about 1800 calories a day. She said if I don't get that my body will have a harder time losing. And with the Protein I eat chicken alot but I guess not enough ha.

If you want to prepare for the band, cut out the fat free ice cream, milk(1/2 maybe?), cheese(1oz tops), Pasta, Soup, wraps. Once you have the band and reach the green zone you probably won't be able to eat most of that stuff.

If you eat 1800 calories a day you may lose but very very slowly. salad is fine as long as it's not mostly iceberg lettuce. Spinach and darker greens have much more nutrition than plain lettuce.

LIke someone said earlier, we all eat much less than 1800. I eat about 1200-1400 but I'm very active and exercise about 45 mnutes a day.

I know it's frustrating to have more road blocks thrown up at you! But like other people I had a 6 month nutrition counseling I had to do before hand and it was hard waiting at the time, but it will go by fast and you will get your band! It can only help you be more successful if you are in the best possible health before hand.

I know the waiting is a difficult thing. With my insurance, I had to do the 6 month wait and had all if the usual pre testing done and had to show I could follow a pre surgical eating plan, which amounted to showing some type of weight loss, and happily I did lose about 35 - 40 lbs before surgery.

Just use the time to maybe read in bariatric nutrition to prepare yourself for the lifestyle you'll be living later. Not sure about your surgeon but the milk was definitely someting I had to give up. Small amounts in cooking are ok for me but otherwise not. Too much natural sugar content. I now use soy milk in its place, less sugar per serving. But even that I didn't start till I was about a year out.

Soup I only have if it has larger chunks and I can avoid the broth. I do eat whole wheat Pasta only occasionally and I didn't start that till over 6 months or so out.

I am surprised they want you to up those calories, did they say that would be after surgery as well? I currently eat between 1000 to 1200 - 1300 depending on if I work out that day.

Wishing you well and hope the time pases quickly for you. If you ever need an ear, feel free to shoot me a message. :)

Oh and as NWgirl said, perhaps not more calories. Focusing on the right types of calories from the right types of foods would be a better choice. I focus on Protein first and my I intake if that is currently between 80 - 100 grams, but directly following surgery my order was for at least 64. After Proteins, I try keeping veggies as my other food source, along with occasional whole grains (more so now that I am farther along).

The dietitian said i am eating all the right foods. I eat really healthy 98% of the time. She was shocked on all the fruits an veggies and healthy alternatives I was eating. I rather have veggies than a cupcake anyway. She said I just need to keep doing what I'm doing. I have back problems and I havnt been able to go to the gym like I need but I can't find the motivation.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
