I was banded almost two years ago. Ever since then I have been shedding hair more or less every other month. My hair grows back, but it's almost always thinner at top. I've been taking Biotin, I get enough protien, etc. Does anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions as to what can be done?

Go get some Biotin it is used to strengthen your hair and nails. It works great! Found in the Vitamin isle. Good luck!

There might be something herbal. I would ask a health food store or search online.

What amount of Biotin are you taking? I noticed there are many different mcg's between 1000 and 7500. I take 7500 and my hair has grown two inches in the past month. It's crazy.

Thanks for the advice. I am taking 1000 mcg's. I will definitely get the 7500 mcg's soon and hope I have better luck!

Good luck to you!! I think 1000 is too low of an amount. I spoke to a few people at the health food store as well as the nurse and they said to up to 7500. I was taking 1000 preop and then once I switched to 7500, my hair and nails started growing like crazy.

Good to know, mine has started shedding like crazy too- I thought I had avoided it, I'm about 5 weeks post op and it just started happening. I'm taking Biotin, but will definitely up the amount!

Mine is still shedding, but not nearly as bad. It took up to month 7 post-op for it to slow down. I hope that it stops on its own!

So 7500 is a safe amount...?

Per my Dr, the nurse and the herb "expert", you can take more than 7500. I take the 7500 daily and it's significant.

Hi. I'm dealing with the same issue. I actually had to go to my Primary Care doctor and the hair loss specialist (your Dermatologist) - I was diagnosed last month with Telogen Effluvium (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/effluviums). I've lost almost ALL my hair and have huge bald spots on my head. My band doctor kept dismissing my claims of Hair loss and I along with seeing the Dermatologist (who is the specialist in this field) - I have to get steroid shots in my head once a month along with using Mens Rogaine twice a day. I also take Biotin (5000 mcg a day) along with my multi-vitamins, B-complex AND I get about 120 grams of Protein in a day.

I actually am in the process of purchasing a wig and have a costume wig (I call it my "test drive" wig) that I wear now because I am tired of caps and head scarves every day. I am sad. Telogen Effluvium is caused by severe stress or trauma to the body which puts your hair in a dormant (non-growing) stage. It is reversible but it could be up to a year before it starts to grow back in, if it does grow back in. I also start acupuncture this weekend and will go every two weeks to get my body to "unstress" if this is the cause. I had my surgery in July 2011 and I've lost about 30 lbs. I keep trying to justify that it's only hair and at least I don't have cancer or something but I tell you that I am humiliated and sad. Not only am I dealing with the issues all of us have regarding eating and lapband but now I have to deal with hair loss. OY! It's only hair. The lapband journey and issues will continue and I am glad I had the surgery. I just have to take one day at a time and know that it will all work out as it will for you.

Best of luck.

May

I was banded about 6 months ago, and 3 months later my hair started falling out by the clumps. I literally was cleaning the drain everytime I showered because it was full of hair.. my hairbrush was the same way. I have thin hair anyway and it has never held a curl or anything...but I eventually got to the point where I had to start scrunching it just to make it look decent. (I've NEVER been able to do it before, but somehow I made it look presentable) I had a friend who had the gastric bypass done and the same happened to her. She told me to take B5 and Lysine. I started taking it immediately and my hair is almost back to normal.. I noticed an immediate difference! I got it cut to make sure there were no more dead ends, and now I can wear it straight again since its layered. I notice new hair coming in everywhere (although its gray, thats ok I'll take it!!) Give these a try and hopefully they will work out for you!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
