I did cut down a fair bit because I knew it would be a few days before I was back to regular intake, lol, so I didnt want the caffeine withdrawal headache as well as recovering from surgery.

But I drink my normal amount now.

Yes! At least get down to 2 cups of plain coffee so you can make it through the week or two post op without such withdrawal. I think you shouldnt drink coffee right after banding because of the way they stitch the band to the stomach to anchor it, coffee is very harsh and acidic. I know that after healing my doctor has no issues with drinking coffee.

I was told that the issue with coffee is dehydration. And after surgery this is something to be very careful of. I was like Jack, after surgery I couldnt stand the taste of coffee anymore. But unlike Jack, I still cant. heh

I work at home so it is very, very easy for me to drink almost a pot of very strong columbian coffee plus lots of times I fix a little more in the afternoon. I had to wean off the coffee so I didnt go through the caffiene withdrawls (apparenlty you get very bad headaches). Then they didnt want me to have coffee until the 3 month mark after surgery. I was counting the days let me tell you. I am now back to normal and a very happy camper. I love my coffee.

p.s. the nutritionist had me mix 1/2 reg and 1/2 Decaf until I got it all the way to only decaf.

;)

That's what I did. And I was off caffiene for about a month after the surgery. That was mostly because I was scared of it :omg:

Now, I'm back to about a half pot a day, and a happy girl. Tho, I stop at 11am, and unlike before the band, I don't have 3-4 diet pepsi to get me through. I'm cold-turkey off sodapop again ;)

I'm as addicted to the ritual of a hot drink as I am to the caffeine. I like 5 or 6 a day. So I really had to find a good instant coffee and a good Decaf - there was a time when I drank 7 cups of brewed coffee a day. That's not good for anyone. Now I just have real coffee first thing in the morning or if I have a yen to use my espresso machine, and I make decaf in the plunger (french press) the rest of the time.

I never stopped drinking coffee and I used it as part of my liquid diet. My doctor never told me any different. I think it depends on the person and their doctor. I would consult with he/she first before you take it away. I drank hot coffee and hot tea alot. I did drink my broth and Water but if I gave up anything....it was the cokes instead of the coffee...but that is just what I did. Everyone is different. Good luck!!

If you don't like the answer your doctor told you .... and you look around long enough, You'll always get someone to agree with you!

Every Doc is different.... I listened to what my Doctor told me.

Mine said it was fine after a week or two. I got down to 1 cup in the morning before surgery. Didn't even miss it for the first week and didn't start back for a couple of weeks.

I still just drink one cup a day......

I had coffee the next morning in the hospital. I drink a pot for french press coffee (2 mugs) every morning. I prefer African coffees myself. Except Tansanian Peaberry. I don't that, but Ethiopian harrar or sidamo.... suliwsi, Kenyan.... Oh yeah.

That was my first stop after leaving the hospital, a good cup of java. I drink 3-4 cups every day, except in summer, then I cut back to 2-3, LOL.

*sips his tasters choice decaff while repeating the mantra "its coffee, really its coffee".

No, I'm not banded but for reasons of blood pressure etc etc I eliminated a lot of stuff, I'm down to one cup of caffiene a day... and many cups of... *sips*...."it is coffee....really...its coffee"

*near hysterical sobbing*

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
