Is the ideal body accessable without plastic surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am pre-band, I will be getting it in the next 2 weeks, however, I am putting EVERYTHING that I have into the surgery. Right now I am 5'7 and 320 lbs, I would like to lose 150 pounds, and I plan to work out with weights and cardio while being on the band. I was wondering if anyone doing the same had a big problem with loose skin. I can't afford plastic surgery after I lose the weight, and I was wondering if weightlifting or anything else helped with the excess skin after weight loss. Should I start saving now for post weight lose surgery?

I started at 244 pounds and I am 5'4" or 5'5". I have been awful about exercising. I have not had a steady exercise routine for more than a couple days at a time through the last eleven months. I am now down just over a hundred pounds and am at my doctor's goal weight. I personally still want to lose another 20 pounds or so. I have virtually no excess skin. What I do have is a little bit in my abdomen area that I could easily tone up if I would just get off my rear and exercise :) My doctor said that a lot of it depends on how old you are. He said that since I'm young (don't feel so young, lol) that we have more collagen in our skin that improves the elasticity of it. I was banded at age 33 and am now 34. I think if you exercise you will be just fine :) Good luck to you on your journey!!!

I lost 120 (but i only started at a bmi of 36) and i dont have a huge problem with excess skin, however my rear and thighs will never be as firm as they would have been, and i do have some pooch on my tummy. You say "perfect body"- I dont believe that is possible without plastic surgery after weight loss, but a nice body sure is, if you can live with a few imperfections. I have nice shape, good tone, but i just need to shrink my skin half a size all over.

I don't think a perfect body is achievable without plastic surgery even for those who haven't had WLS. Look at all those actors, models etc that you see in mags and on screen. You will be hardpushed to find one that hasn't had some kind of plastic surgery and then of course the images are digitally altered and airbrushed as well.

I didn't say perfect, I said ideal. I meant ideal to you as an individual. Not necessarily what society sees as ideal. I have a realistic weight loss goal but I'm afraid that once I get there I will have saggy loose skin .

Well that depend in how you define ideal. Odds are you will have some loose skin and theres nothing you can do to prevent that, loose skin is already there before you lose weight, it happened while you were getting fat, unfortunately. Do you have a lot of stretchmarks? That skin usually doesnt recover. Genetics play a big part too.

Trust me, you'll learn to except a little loose skin for how great you'll feel skinny. Sorry, but the skin is effected by exercise at all (age, genetics, and how much weight you've lost from what areas are the factors). I've lost over 100, and at 49 (52 now) it's not too bad (can wear a modest bikini/skirted). We're all built differently. -BG

I am 52 and getting ready for a Tummy Tuck as my abdomen and love handles resemble Jabba the Hutt or a shar pei puppy. Just to give you a mental picture. I am not complaining as I lost 100 pounds getting ready for surgery then another 60 since my lapband. So I have nothing to complain about. Starting a savings plan is never a bad idea. I wish you the best.

I haven't been banded yet and while I am going to work out with weights and try to fill in the skin, drink plenty of Water to hydrate my skin, and apply lotion frequently, I am realistic in knowing that I have had 2 babies back to back, which included a 50lbs weight gain with the last one, and both were c-section. It's not ever gonna look like abs of steal. My fiance is prepared to pay for a Tummy Tuck and a breast lift once I am at goal and I am completely ok with that!

As muelle said depending on your age has a lot to do with the elasticity of your skin, but are you going thru insurance? Because if so and worst case scenario you need surgery most insurances pay forit because it's then considered reconstructive surgery not plastic surgery

I also think it depends on where you carry your fat. I "look" fatter than most anyone I know because I carry it all around my waist, the whole spare tire thing. I think there is a very good change I will always have flap there because even if I lose it, it's been stretched out so far it will never be the same as it was. But I have really tiny wrists and ankles, as small as my sisters who weigh only 98 pounds (we used to all look similar although I've always been the biggest/tallest). So as per your question, I think I'll have a body I can live with and be glad about but I'm never going to look like a supermodel. My idea of the "perfect" body is one that I can keep until old age, can run around after my kids, can sit without being uncomfortable, run and not be weary, etc. but my idea will NEVER be what Hollywood's idea is. Even if I had the money for plastic surgery, I wouldn't do it. To each his own?

My idea of the perfect body at the moment would be one that had enough Iron, enough energy, perfect cholesterol levels and wasnt freezing cold all the damn time, lol. Just now I wouldnt care what it actually looked like.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
