Any other derby girls out there?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any other derby girl bandsters out there. If so, how has your post-op skating gone? I was banded on Sept. 20 of this year and (naughty me) started skating again about a week and half later. I am trying, however, to watch core exercise for a couple more weeks and am still taking it easy on wheels.

Any advice for getting back on the track? I've got jammer dreams for this time night year! ;)

I am so jealous - I have always dreamed of being a derby girl. How did you get started?

I love watching the sport, and played an evil human male wall to be knocked down. Some of you girls hit harder than some football players I used to play with...

I am curious how you are dealing with gut hits with the band. I hit the gym hard after my surgery and rebuilt my core but, just because of my background, I am trying to learn how to take a hit, a body check, or a punch to that area safely.

The closest I've found is a karate student that took Aikido classes to learn to deflect blows to that area entirely.

I've been wondering the EXACT same thing!

Small, small world to meet another derby gal here  AND one that is kind of close (I'm in MD!)

My band date is coming up on November 2nd and I told my league I'll be on medical LOA for a few weeks.

I have brought up skating/derby with my doctor and nutritionist but they don't really know what I'm talking about. I'm pretty scared of getting the port hit hard.

So you felt that good a week'ish later?? That's awesome. I was so afraid I'd be off skates for at least a month or so.

Yay! What are the odds?! This is rad!

Yeah, I felt pretty good about 10 days later (like ass before that, though). Technically, I was not cleared skated when I got back on the track... But I was getting that itch. I felt fine but was just doing basic skating. Since I've moved up to endurance skills but am not doing an direct core exercises and am no-contact til next week. I am definitely nervous about going back to 100% but the nurse at my office is a huge derby buff and is so supportive.

I am so stoked to slim down and speed up. And I know my girls will take it easy until I am healed... I am worried about bouting, though. It's a whole new world of skating. I'm down about 35 pounds in about a month and cannot imagine skating even lighter. I've got to say - the thought of jamming and skating faster has been a huge motivator!!!

That is so great!

Even crazier we are the same age and almost same height -ya got an inch on me ;)

Since joining derby I have been up and down weight-wise. I believe at my lightest I was around 215?

Imagining dropping serious pounds will help with speed/endurance (which are my biggest issues).

Jamming has always been a bit of a dream for me and when I DO jam I wrecking ball into people and go to the box, ha.

I'm still in the "band closet"..haven't told anyone except my brother and husband. Taking about a week off work then doing office/easy stuff for a couple weeks.

Are you on NoVa? I'm with Key City (part of a split from Mason-Dixon over the summer and formed a new league in Frederick)

I volunteer for DC sometimes and go to most of their home bouts.

So awesome to "meet" you!

Whoo hoo!!!

You don't know how glad I am to find your post! I'm Lethal Eject-Her of the Sintral Valley Derby Girls!

I was torturing myself for years before deciding to get the band. Still not banded yet, but hoping for Feb. Anywho...

I have been working on my skills and trying to become bout worthy and the weight just keeps holding me back. After the accidents and injuries, I have only skated for about 1 1/2 years of the 5 I've been with the team! I can't wait for the fat issues to be a non-issue! I miss my girls...

Just so glad to see other Derby Girls here!

Keep us posted on how skating goes with the band!

Lethal

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
