Should I go or not go ??

Recommended Posts

I will be having my surgery on Oct 6th and my good friend is having her bridal shower Oct. 9th, do you think I will be able to go. Will I be in a lot of pain? I don't know what to do, because I really don't know what to expect. My doctor describes the pain I should feel as if I did tons and tons of stomach crunches. I don't believe him I think he's surgar coating it. Can you all please tell me how you after surgery, and the next few days after? Do you think going to the bridal shower is a bad idea? Please help me figure this out. Thanks in advance!

Nicole

I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you take it easy. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain and 3 days after surgery I went shoe shopping! Was back to work in 6 days!

To be honest i could not have gone anywhere 3 days later. I had herrendous gas pains in my shoulder and was super sore. I was out of work a little more than a week but I needed every day. Goodluck.

There are some things that cannot be predicted - this is one. By day 3 I was not ready to do jumping-jacks but I was actually feeling pretty good. Be good to yourself and recognize you just need to play it by ear. Your doc will advise you after surgery and it's best to follow his/her instructions. Congrats on the surgery date!

I guess you'll have to wait and see. On day three we went for a two mile walk and I had almost no pain. I don't have any idea why some do and some don't

but I suspect it has to do with the skill of the surgeon and quality of the hospital. Most patients at Centers of Excellence seem to do quite well.

This is how I describe the pain.

On a scale of 1-10 the pain Is a 5. On that scale of 5 the pain ranges from 1-20.

If you do absolutely nothing but lay in bed days 1-3, depending in how good a friend she is to you, you may be able to go.

That's my .02

I would find the hardest part would be being around all the food. But my swelling went down super quick & I was staring to get hungry on day 3.

Like the others have said you will just have to see how your surgery goes and how much pain you are in. I was feeling pretty good on the 3rd day and ran a couple errands with my husband and that evening I was hurting. I feel like it sort of set me back a day but everyone's experience is different. I am 2 weeks out and still sore. I am a lot more exhausted than I expected to be. Make sure you don't push yourself though, let your body heal. Good luck!

I went to a concert on day four. I had shoulder and gas pains but I had bought the tickets before my surgery was scheduled so there was no way I was missing out - would I do it again? Probably.

Can you explain to your friends that you have had minor surgery or been unwell (depending on whether you are sharing re your band or not) and let them know you will be there but perhaps a little on the quiet side?

I was banded on a thursday... I went out to dinner with hubby (I had water) on Friday night... I lasted 2 hrs. On day 4 I went out again for a few hours... rested Monday and Tuesday and went to work on Wednesday. This is such an individual thing.... hopefully your friend will be understanding if you just come for a short time.

And regarding the post I saw about food being a problem... I had no appetite that first week and had to make myself drink my liquids... I could have cared less about any goodies! LOL

yeah, I would have to say he's sugar coating it! Although everyone is different. I was still very sore, had major shoulder pain, and was high on pain meds and super sleepy for several days after surgery.

Pain would not have been a problem for me at that point, but the fatigue would have made me back out of the bridal shower at the last minute. A simple shower was kicking my ass at that stage.

I would agree with everyone else that it depends on how you feel. I did great and went out to a friend's house the day after my surgery. The only pain I felt was in my throat from the tube during surgery. Other than that...I was fine. No gas pains and no real soreness!

I felt horrible for about 4 days and then a tiny bit better but couldn't walk straight cause of the gas pains. To me I think my Dr sugar coated everything! Lol I don't regret having it done though...But like everyone says, everyone is different.

This is one of those times you're just going to have to see how you go. I'm sure your friend will understand. You just cant predict how good (or bad) you're going to feel.

However, I did go for a walk of a couple of miles the day after my lapband surgery. And I had major abdominal surgery (eight hours worth) last november and made it to my grade six class's graduation ceremony four days later. Only for an hour or two and not for the dinner, but I got up and spoke and I was there. It was fine.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
