Does anyone drink a lot of liquid at meals to get things like bread down?

I have lost 65 pounds so far, and six months in I hadn't had a fill. Now after my fill, I end up drinking a lot of liquid to be able to tolerate any kind of bread. Does this happen to anyone else? Is it hard for you to loose weight do to this because you end up flushing some of the food through and being hungry faster? I don't feel that hungry but I am a little worried about this.

Drinking with food is a BIG NO NO! If you can't tolerate the bread then don't eat it! You will stretch your pouch over time or cause a slip. I can't eat sandwiches with 2 pieces of bread anymore, I have to eat them with only one piece or not at all. A lot of bread is just carbs and fillers.

I can't drink after I've eaten anything - makes me vomit immediately. Once in a while I still try it - especially with spicy food. But it comes right back up. I can only eat 1 pc of bread at a time - and I try to limit it to once a week. And I have to eat it SLOWWWLY. I think not drinking after meals is one of the big no-no's docs have for band patients. I have to wait about an hour, or until the food hits my tummy - which I can usually feel.

same here .. I end up throwing my dinner back up if I drink while I am eating...

The doc said that drinking while you eat breaks the food down faster and allows you to eat more defeating the purpose of the band...

bread is a big no no with the band. I follow the rules and have had great results. It did take a few months to get over the no drinking with meals thing, but I don't and I do not miss it. I got lab band to succeed and I do not want to mess it up doing the wrong thing. good luck biggrin.gif

I don't have a problem with bread if I eat it very VERY slowly. But I NEVER drink with my meals. I agree, if you can't tolerate it, don't eat it or eat it and be satisfied with filling up quicker... both seem like win/win situations to me!

This topic comes up time and again. My fill PA says there is a lot recent data about this, suggesting that it's not the big drama thing it was once thought to be. The lack-of-hunger thing is caused by pressure on the vagus nerve, and the weight of the food in the pouch is what causes that pressure - the pouch does not need to be stuffed with food to get the result. Just the process of eating is enough to put that pressure on the nerve.

Food tends to pass through the band in a short amount of time, and drinking with the meal has virtually nothing to do with it. I find if I don't sip liquids with meals, I have trouble swallowing. My PA told me, (just last Wednesday, in fact), that if I want to drink with my meals, to go ahead and drink with my meals. I don't guzzle liquids, I sip them, but I do it throughout the day.

Some people (like me) have no problem drinking with meals. I do not feel like I get hungry any faster, and I've certainly lost a lot of weight. The trick for me is Portion Control. I put ONLY a normal bandster-sized meal on my plate, and when that food is gone, I'm done eating. Period. I don't snack or graze or cheat or whatever. I plan my meals and eat properly when I do. The trick is to NOT eat what you shouldn't.

When and if I eat bread which is rarely I have it with Soup and have to dunk it to get it mushy.

I've just removed it from my list of foods that I can eat because it isn't worth it to me to have it get stuck.

If I drink with meals I eat double what I would if I don't drink with my meal. It could all be in my head and what I've conditioned my self to believe but that's how it is for me.

If your having trouble eating bread then why eat it. There are other things you can substitute without drinking with your meals just to get the food down. If you have to drink to push food down then you shouldnt eat that food. Because this is what your doing: Pushing food through the band over time causes thickening of the pouch at the stoma and could eventually cause you to have problems eating. I would say just dont do it.

I am 2 1/2 months out and have lost 32 Lbs so far post surgery. I have had only 1fill.....my suggestion mis to not eat any bread. At first I tried some bread and it always was rough going down, many times it wouldn't; so I had to stop eating all bread and most Pasta all together. I do sip on Water with my meal....I am trying to stop that but it's only a little.

bread is a big no no. I am actually happy that I can't tolerate bread anymore. That's one less carb I have to worry about! :) Drinking while eating another big no, no. Only if you are eating Soup I would say drink something, but with solids I can't drink because it makes me feel that something got stuck and I hate it.

Bread! ouch! My Dr. told me to stay away from it. Reason is no matter how many times you chew it, it just rolls into a sticky ball after you swallow it.Other reasons as listed on some other comments. I tried only to see if i could and that was a rap for me. NO MORE bread for me! I try my best not to drink while eating. Im over a year into it and still have problems with this. well good luck to everyone.

My mother had the surgery done, and she can't drink too much liquid, otherwise it comes back up. I'm surprised you're able to do this without feeling abdominal pains.

bread is a no no to eat, drinking is a no no while eating.

45 minutes to an hour after you eat you can drink, any sooner it comes back up for me.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
