Pain in my chest, kinda feels like hunger..but its hurts!!

Recommended Posts

I am 2 days post op. As soon as I woke up from surgery I remember this terrible pain in the middle of my back..it has stayed with me since going home. It has gotten better over time..but now I am having these pains in my chest. Right around the breast bone area...it sort of feels like I need to burp, but then again sometimes it feels like my belly is growling?? I have been doing the shakes and stuff and I just pureed some tuna salad...i took 2 spoonfuls and it was wonderful! Im just afraid of vomiting and I dont know what to do?? Also , how much are we able to drink at one time? I have thi 32 ounce bottle and I fill it with different things and it feels like it takes me forever to get it down if I just "sip" on it. I am off work for afew days, but when I go back Im a nurse and wont have time to sip on this thing all day long.. I can understand being able to do 4 oz at a time, I would be good with that... but really can we only handle just sips?? I wish I would have clarified this with my doctor before going home..but I had so much on my mind I forgot to ask!! If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it.. I feel as though I have broken ribs in my back at times.. its not comfortable at all..Im tryin to cough all I can, but I think my spine is gonna come out lol!

Hi: I am 6 days post op and also feel the pain in my breastbone at times. I am quite hungry as the Protein drinks are not doing it for me now.

Did your doc say its okay to do the tuna now?? Just wondering. I would love to try it but I'm scared it will hurt something if I start on mushies after only 1 week. CAT

I am 4 days post-op and also had pain around my breastbone but a little lower right after surgery. I saw the surgeon the day after because I was an out of town patient and he wanted to check me before i flew home. I was able to ask him about the pain and he said not to worry, it was just the port site. It hurts because they sew the port to muscle.

My doc keeps you on liquids for one week, but that includes yogurt (no chunks), pudding and thin Soups so hunger hasn't been bad.

I called the office this morning and they told me if I was handeling the full liquids then I could go to the pureed meats..The tuna could literally be sucked through a straw. I took an ice cube tray and filled it and left it in the fridge. They told me the pain is probably from the gas..I was finally able to go to the bathroom tonight and it helped a little. I ate some creamy Soup and drank my shakes today but this pain in my chest is the worst..I cant even describe it really. I am going to stay off my meats for a few days and try to get my liquids in..I made the tuna because my head was telling me I wasnt getting enough to eat, and I think Im just trying to rush myself into feeling better. It also doesnt help when I have to sleep sitting up on the couch, but its the only way I can get comfortable. I bought some creamed Soups and pudding mix so Im going to stick with that until the end of the week when I get my staples out.. Im trying to be positive, but I really feel rough. Hope you all are feeling better!

Not to worry. I had the same pain for about a week post-op. It goes away. It's gas. Gas-X helps but that weird hunger/chest/can't breathe pain does go away eventually. I know it's weird but nothing to worry about. Hang in there!

Last night I had that pain in my breatbone......right above where the band was placed. I took liquid tylenol and that helped alot. Went to sleep and it was gone. Can you sleep on 3 pillows in bed.....kind of sitting up position. That is what I do and I'm pretty comfortable. Can't sleep much though.....getting about 6 hours.....then have to get up and move. April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
