Woo Hoo, this morning I am down 50 lbs. I just wanted to share a little bit of something I have found that may help other's with some depression. I started out my lap band journey just wanting to lose weight because I was starting to have some health problems. One of the biggest things I hated was that it was harder to roll over in bed at night and I was tired of my clothes always feeling restrictive. I had surgery Feb 23, 2011.

My weight loss has been pretty steady but there have been times when I have felt depressed that it wasn't happening faster.............I know the best way is slow and steady but when you have a lot to lose, it's always frustrating to see that all of your blood, sweat and tears can't make the scales move as fast as you want them to.

A few years ago I was diagnosed as being a bit hypothyroid and I had hoped when they finally got my medication regulated that the weight would fall off. It didn't. Before my surgery, I started taking a Multi-Vitamin and 2 fish oil pills a day. It really helped my mood a lot. After surgery, I couldn't take the fish oil pills any more because they were really big. Since surgery, I have been snappy a bit with my family and some days I have just been so frustrated with my progress. I knew it was in my head, but I didn't know what to do about it. In the past few weeks, I have really started looking at what I have been eating and how it affects brain chemestry and how I feel. I was pretty adicted to sugar before surgery. I started looking for suppliments and things to help with the sugar cravings. I have found two things that have really helped improve my mood, the sugar cravings, and help my weight loss are glutamin and fish oil.

Since my surgery I have been taking 2 MultiVites Gummy Vitamins. (I have found all of this stuff at Wal-Mart except the glutamine). I take a Calcium chocolate chew. I have also been taking one pack of Coromega Omega 3+D. It comes in an orange box and the flavor is tropical orange. Since surgery I have tried all kinds of liquid and gummy Omega 3 products and they have all been so nasty that I couldn't take them. Something happened the other day and I was just feeling a little blue. It wasn't really anything I could put my finger on, just frustration. Then I decided to take and extra pack of the fish oil. Something happened immediately and I felt my mood improve. Then I got on the internet and started doing a lot of research on the benefits of the Omega 3 and how our brains really need these good fats to functhion properly and make good use of our serotonin. I also researched how important these fats are to help lose weight. I was really surprised. I hope anyone who is frustrated or feeling a little depressed will do some research on the subject and maybe give it a try themselves. I was kind of stalled out on my weight loss because I had stoped taking my fishoil and glutamine is supposed to help maintain muscle and lose fat and is supposed to be excellent for recovery from surgery and for people following a restricted calorie diet. Again, I was stalled out on my weight loss and went 3 weeks without losing a pound. In this past week since uping my Omega 3 to two packs a day, and starting my gluatime again, I have dropped 4 lbs this past week.

Again, this may not be beneficial for everyone, so I hope that you will do your own research on it. The omega 3 is also good for bad cholesteral. I knew this from my past also because about 3 years ago I went to the doctor and my LDL was really high. I started taking the fish oil every day and by the next month when I went to the doctor, she asked what I had been taking because my LDL was really low. Best of luck everyone on your journey and us all getting healthy and having the best times of our lives.

Thanks for sharing that, Trish! I might have to try some of the suggestions.

50 lbs is fantastic!

Really good post Trish. I used to take the fish oil every day and stopped because of the band. I will just find some smaller ones and start them up again. I never realized the connection before. I will do some research of my own but you have given me a great jumping off place.

Thanks for posting this! I've been thinking about trying fish oil because I have clinical depression. Now I may order some. I looked at the Coromega but I thinking the consistency of it might not be doable for me. I don't like anything slimy, like pudding or Jello.< /p>

Thank you your imput would be greatly appreciated. I highly recommend the book "The Depression Cure" by Dr. Stephen Ilardi. It is a well written, thoroughly researched book on how important Omega 3s are and explains some other aspects that can help beat depression (certain Vitamins, light exposure, regular exercise, increased social activities). The book can be found on Amazon.com.< /span>

It is important to note that Omega 3s need to be taken at a minimum dosage level of specific types of Omega 3s for therapeutic value, and you usually have to take 2 or 3 or even more capsules to achieve that dosage. The book gives the specific levels but I don't have it near me right now. If anyone wants the info let me know and I'll look it up when I can!

How do the Coromega packets taste? I need to find a new way to supplement my Omega 3 intake now that I've had my surgery.

This is a very interesting post. I have been wanting to get some Omega 3's to take as I know they are good for a healthy heart, but where do you find some that can be taken with the band (so that I will already be taking them for when I do get banded)?

I eat pretty high Protein just because I get really tired if I eat to many carbs. I exercise about an hour a day for 6 days a week but if I miss a day, I don't stress over it. I got the Coromega fish oil from Wal-Mart. If you look where the Vitamin suppliments are and then look where all of the fish oil is, it comes in a colorful yellow box. I tried just plain liquid fish oil and it was so nasty that I threw the bottle away and it cost around $30. Then I tried squeezing the regular fish oil capsules I used to take out on some food, still really nasty. Then the lady at the health food store recommended squeezing the capsules into a glass of juice. (still nasty). Then I tried some kids Gummy Omega 3's but they didn't have enough fish oil in them to make a difference and they were coated in sugar. I found the Coromega Omega's and they are tropical flavored and are loaded with Vitamin D. The box contains little packets. I started off taking one but I really felt the difference when I took 2 in one day. I even tried 3 one day and felt even better. I have lost 4 lbs this week with the increased fish oil, where I was barely loosing one or two in a good week before.

I also have a day a week where I'll eat a small 3 Musketeers or have a 40 calorie fudgecycle. My skinny butt husband is also addicted to chocolate and sometimes he will ask if I want a bite and sometimes I will. The glutamine I think really helps too because it is an amino acid that is said to help you burn fat and not muscle so I think that really helps being on a lowered calorie diet that the weight I am actually losing is fat and not any more muscle. Hope that helps.

I think they taste great. They have been the only one's I can stomach. They are also higher in the EPA and DHA than any of the other stuff I have found.

I think that was a great post. Also congratulations on the 50 lbs!! I just wanted to mention that if you are already taking an antidepressant be careful what you add to it. The Fish Oil is no problem, but other herbs and meds are not good to take when you are taking any drugs for depression or anxiety. Always good to check with your Dr. first.

Oh thank you for mentioning that. I am actually hypo-thyroid and I am not taking any other antidepressants. I have in the past but they really started messing me up after a while. I started looking for whatever I could find to improve it naturally. I knew I was Vitamin or mineral or something deficient because my diet for many years consisted of doritos and Mt. Dew. You don't get very many nutrients that way but it sure was good while it lasted. I'm just paying for it now............giggle.

If you went there and looked at some posts. Mine is about ARMOUR THYROID.

A natural ingredient for the thyroid.

I got on this stuff about 5 months ago, and for the first time in my life, my Thyroid is in NORMAL Range.

So check it out.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
