Not getting enough protien and chest pain

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

Six days post-op and still excited. I'm getting a bit scared though. I have not been able to get more than 24 grams of Protein in since the surgery. I tried a Protein Shake 2 days ago with Peanut Butter hoping to Soup the amount up but ended up with horrible chest pain for the rest of the day. Figured it was the peanut butter so yesterday I just went with a ready made EAS Carbcontrol Protein shake yesterday and ended up with chest pain pretty much all day but thought it might have been the Cream of Broccoli soup (yes blended). Today I had 6 oz of the same shake I had yesterday and I'm dying of the chest pain again. I haven't been able to drink more than 5 cups of anything - soup, broth, shake. So needless to say I have not been getting hardly any Water due to the feeling I need calories and protien more. Any suggestions? I so hope this won't last forever. I so want this to work. I have an ice pack on my belly and a heating pad on my chest. This seems to be helping a tad.

HELP!!

At this point, Water is more important than nutrition. You don't want to become dehydrated. (I did after surgery and it wasn't pretty!) Drink your Protein Shakes and broth as much as you can tolerate, but don't try to hit a magic number...at least until you are healed.

I was banded 6/30/11. I felt that same chest pain.... Mine was gas. After i would drink my shake i would stand awhile ( wash dishes, sweep..ect ) to get the gas moving. If it didn't work i would use some gas x.

Check out some of the recipes I created while on my 6 week full liquids. Ignoring the peanut butter ones, of course. I also got chest pains with the heaviness of some things like peanut butter if I was not careful and had too much. Once I started doing this I was getting more than my recommended 60grams a day. Some of them are pushing the limits a bit, but most of them were a true life saver, as I never found myself getting desperate for real food!

J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes

PHASE 2: Full liquid diet

This starts 1 day after surgery

NOTE: On the Full liquid diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements.

Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons.

The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids.

All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery.

Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them.

*All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.*

My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the liquid Recipes:

1. Use my snack recipes only once a day

2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list

3. Stay under 1000 calories.

4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used

5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day

6. Take liquid multi Vitamins from Whole Foods Market once a day

7. DRINK MORE WATER

These recipes are fabulous! Thanks 4 posting.

Question for you though - why is the:

DOUBLE CHO-COCOA COVERED BANANA considered High Fat & Calorie) ?

If your using whey Protein, 1/2 banana and natural Peanut Butter and skim milk...I would think that is not high fat or calorie? If you have a chance explain....thanks again!

First week post op, I maybe got 30 grams of Protein per day. I wasn't concerned, once I got to full liquids the second week, I got much closer to my requirements

Try only a small amount of the shake at once, I tried 4 oz today and ended up with horrible chest pain. I walked laps around the house while moaning...was awful! I know that feeling!! I think I'll try an ounce tomorrow. I tried applesauce today (2 tablespoons) with a few hours in between, and was fine. I'm blaming the shake. You know how they sort of foam up in the glass? I'm thinking that's what happens in our tiny bellies. I'm 3 days postop, by the way. hang in there!!

They make a tasteless Protein powder that you can add to anything! Just a thought! And remember broccoli will give you gas and bloat you! I have issues with broc Soup because it makes me very gassy!drink more Water and walk if it happens again that's what helped me with gas!

Thanks allicap :) I'm glad you like them.

The Peanut Butter is higher in fat and depending on the brand you use it can be bad fats. You want to try to go for a pure, raw Peanut Butter from a health food store, instead of a generic brand that uses hydrogenated oils, which are the bad fats. Banana's are a higher density fruit. They have a tiny amount of fat in them as well as a lot of calories, so adding 2 things to your shake will make it higher in calories. The more ingredients you add to your shake, the higher calorie it will become, so watch what your putting in and how much. The great thing is that the bana and peanut butter help to add more protein! :D

I like the peanut butter and banana ones for Breakfast because they sustain me for hours and I am able to leave the house for a while knowing that I won't need to "eat" again until I get home. Careful with the ones with peanut butter in them because they are SUPER, SUPER heavy and can create the shoulder and chest pain if you drink too much. I was satisfied with just 2oz of the peanut butter ones and gradually went up to 6oz later on. Another person on this thread says the same thing about the shakes being heavy, so just do what feels ok for you.

I am not a licensed doctor or nutritionist, so if your worried about anything with the recipes, talk with your doc & nutritionist about it and they should be able to help you out further :)

I'm just another bandster like you who happens to have fun experimenting! :D

The calories in a raw banana according to the banana’s size are roughly as follows:

These recipes are fabulous! Thanks 4 posting.

Question for you though - why is the:

DOUBLE CHO-COCOA COVERED BANANA considered High Fat & Calorie) ?

If your using whey Protein, 1/2 banana and natural peanut butter and skim milk...I would think that is not high fat or calorie? If you have a chance explain....thanks again!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
