Not losing weight

Recommended Posts

Hi I was banded on 6/20/2011 and started soft foods on 6/27/2011. My doctor doesn't make us do the mushy stage. Anyway, I haven't lost any weight since then, in fact I gained a little bit (like a pound). I still can't eat very much. I guess I am still swollen. Yesterday I had an egg for lunch, and a small piece of chicken parmesan (maybe 2 - 3 oz) for dinner. I also had a Protein Shake. I just don't know why I am not losing weight when I'm eating so little. Is this normal?

It's perfectly normal not to lose weight at this stage. Your body is directing all its energy towards healing from surgery, so you may even notice weight gain. Concentrate on your recovery right now, and don't worry about the scale. The weight loss will come!

Try to avoid the tempation of daily weighing it'll drive ya buggy. Once a week is enough due to normal Fluid retention or release the scale can bounce up and down 1-3 pounds day to day. Sounds like you have the diet thing under tight control and from what you describe it's way less than 1,000 calories which could leave you malnourished so I suggest that you discuss your diet with the doctor or his support team to be sure you are eating healthy and in the proper amounts. The goal is to reach a specific weight and maintain it so severe dieting could sabotage the ultimate goal. In my case the doctor has stated to not expect more than a 1 pound a week loss due to my age. That is dissappointing to me as I want instant slimness :) but I understand the slow weight loss can mean permanant change and perhaps lessen the saggy skin issues that rapid weight loss exacerbates.

You are just starting out so don't fret too much. Eat healthy foods and eat enough to satisfy and nourish your body while you lose. Use the expertese of the dietitian and the doctor to guide you through this first stage and set the goals for a safe and reasonable weight loss. Good luck...

This is 100% normal. You have fluids in you from surgery and swelling too. Your body is healing for the first 6 weeks. Do not expect any weight loss during this time. Once you start getting your fills you will be in the weight losing zone. I was also very disappointed with the lack of weight loss for eating so little-it;s been over a month and I still seem stalled, but I am hoping my 2nd fill in 2 weeks helps me get closer to the zone. Being banded requires a lot of patience, unlike gastric by-pass surgery this is a slower road to weight loss-which I think may be a healthier way. Good luck to you!

You are not alone...my weight loss stalled at 3 weeks after surgery and I lost nothing for 3-4 weeks. I was so frustrated. I felt that since I was barely eating anything compared to before that I should be dropping 5 pounds a week. I was eating about 800 calories a day. I ended up increasing my calories to 1000-1200 a day and now I am losing.

I'm right there with ya! I lost 10 lbs within the first 5 days and nothing since. I'm hoping my body gets the message soon and starts losing weight b/c its frustrating to be eating so little and seeing the same numbers.

I'm in the same boat, but glad to read on here that this might be normal. I was banded on June 23rd and have lost 9 pounds total and haven't lost anything else since getting off liquids... guess it might be time to up the exercise portion!

I don't understand...how much weight loss are you expecting at this stage? You're only a couple weeks post surgery and you've already lost more than 15 pounds. To me, that's doing better than awesome.

I agree with Wheelchair, I think your weightloss is actually above average at this stage of the game. Don't worry too much, you're going to do just fine! Just do what your doctor says, exercise and focus on healing right now!! You're on the right track :)

you're doing great girlie! Dr's cywes and pinnar wont expect a drastic weight loss until you're getting filled. Stay off the carbs and don't worry. If anything, call jodi or ke'lani for some guidance. i'm @ nikkicavana@gmail.com on Facebook, i'm happy to be your buddy - we were banded only a week apart by the same practice! rolleyes.gif

I was in the same boat. I had my surgery 6/17, lost 11 lbs week before surgery and i lost 11 more lbs the week after surgery. Now only about 1-2 lbs loss since then. It is frustrating but I'm looking forward to my fill on 7/26 and exercising! Good Luck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
