I think I started gaining a lot of weight around the age of 10. I guess the poor genetic disposition added on with an unhealthy lifestyle was present from the get-go.
I ballooned to about 265lbs during my junior year in high school and that was when I decided to make a change. Thinking back, I had no clue on what to eat, how to eat, and when to eat. I joined my school's cross country team and ran 5+ miles everyday but my poor eating habits meant I wasn't losing anything...
Freshmen year in college was actually very healthy for me. I got down to about 190lbs, was able to run a 16 minute 5K, and was working out everyday. At this point, I was around an 11% body fat, had 110/70 blood pressure, and my runner's heart beat at 50bpm. Plus, through reading and a lot of research, I learned how to eat properly to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Fast forward to 2007, I was a third year in college and had a very serious motorcycle accident that left me paralyzed from the chest down. Amidst the anger, depression, and confusion, I found some relief in food. I knew that with my limited mobility, my food intake was crucial to maintaining my health.... but the situation deemed otherwise.
Long story short, I kept on gaining weight after my accident and I realized that I was at my wit's end on trying to lose weight. I've done it before, so I thought I could do it again. But being a paraplegic, I would have had to limit my intake to less than 1000 to see some actual weight loss....and I just couldn't do it for a prolonged period of time.
That's how I'm here. Getting banded June 3rd of this year, 3 weeks and change after my initial consultation.
