Exercise

Recommended Posts

Exercise. Stupid exercise. I have only gone for a walk once, and just did my elliptical for 20 minutes, since being banded.

What have you been doing (pre or post op)? My plan, as of now, is to walk or elliptical for 20 minutes each day.

Hi Spot!

Glad you are feeling better..... I am not banded just yet but I plan to walk (both outside and on treadmill) and also use my yoga ball for stability and strength training. I can't use the ball the way you normally do yet (bad / weak back) but I can use it to increase my balance and posture (sitting on it at work) and also using my tension band to do some great excercises that I found on the lap-band website. Once I get that down I plan to add some free weights to tone my arms (I have awful spaghetti arms)!

Someone had to bring up this topic at some point :D

I have a treadmill, but I really prefer to be outside. I found a website for local nature trails. I'm so excited. I'm going to take my kids with me this Saturday to go check out one that is about 5 miles from my house. It leads to a small waterfall. The website said it was 3 miles to the waterfall for a roundtrip total of 6 miles. Hmmmm...it might take a couple of trips to build up to a 6 mile walk. But, I just might surprise myself. We all love to explore. So it is easy to forget about the distance and time when you are chasing butterflies, playing in a waterfall and admiring all of the spring flowers. I just have to figure out something for the summer when it is 100+ degrees. Maybe morning walks?

I started going to the gym on Monday. I have been doing ellipticals and walking around the track, nothing to intense. On Tuesday cos i had heard how great Zumba classes were i decided to try it out and it was so much fun I did it at my own pace so that my port does not flip i worked up some sweat and i was really happy. I took a break on Wednesday. Today there is another Zumba class and i plan to go for it. I have never been an exercise person but i know it would definitely help with the weight loss. i am so happy about the zumba class i don't feel like i am working out at all. find something you love and you will not feel like it is exercise.

Had surgery April 15th. I have been walking my dog, but not very far, at least 2 times a day...probably 15 minutes at a time? May not account for much exercise as she likes to stop and sniff everything! I do live on the third floor, so today I have been up and down the stairs maybe 7 times?

Went to the gym today for the first time and got on the treadmill for 25 minutes. You guys are lucky, as I was told by my doc that I have to wait 4 weeks to get on the eliptical or arc trainer.I kinda want to wait at least another week for breaking that rule because of the earlier issue with my incision. Tomorrow I will do a little more.

My doc said no exercise other than walking for the first six weeks. I haven't started yet other than walking around the house and stuff since I'm still really sore. I'm going to try to start next week.

I have been trying to walk everyday but am feeling weak. Want to start working out at a gym but by the end of the day can hardly lift my arms! I am trying to do everything exactly the way they told me to so I have a good outcome but this weakness is really starting to get me down!

I have been back to normal - 3 weeks post op. Mountain Biking -2hrs 5x a week and will be starting weight training. I was super weak and tired the the first two weeks post op - the the low calorie intake and the liquid diet made it super hard for me to even go for a walk. Now I am up to about 950 calories and feeling much stronger! Woo Hooo!

I'm 4 days post op (is that all? It feels likes weeks!) and I started exercising yesterday. I took my dog for a stroll. Can't even call it a walk, we went so slowly. But it was nice to get out, and work some of the kinks out of my back from sitting at home all day. Today I'll take another walk, a bit faster this time.

I have to wait three weeks before I can go to aquafit. That's my exercise of choice, with my best friend. I'm looking forward to going back.

post op (10days right now) I've been walking at least a mile a day. That is the only thing that I do until I go back for my follow up on the 16th of May.

I am finally starting to feel good and am 20 days out! I am walking at least 30mins a day in addition to working which is good for me because I have never been one to excercise. I can't believe that I have gone more than 4 weeks without eating anything but Protein Drinks, Water, and popsicles. I finally get to go to mushies after seeing my surgeon on Wednesday! It's amazing what we can do if we put our minds to it.

12 days out and today is the first time I have actually been hungry. First day I have gotten all my Protein in without a shake. But kinda missed it so think I will have one for Breakfast. Walking about 2 miles a day. Getting in all the Water has been easy, thank heavens!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
