Gall Bladder

Recommended Posts

I need some advice on what may be going on with me. I have a bloated stomach (feels like someone blew a balloon in my belly) and a intermittant sharp pain shooting through my back under my right shoulder blade. It also stays tender under my shoulder blade and is very uncomfortable sleeping on my right side. It does seem to feel better after I've walked or exercised. I am calling the Dr. tomorrow even though I was hesitant going due to my deductible higher since insurance changed over. I'm not sure if this could be related to my band..........I had last fill 12/2010 but had to be unfilled due to tightness. I can't seem to ever get to a sweet spot and am gaining weight back :( .

I sincerely appreciate if someone can help me with my question!

Thanks!

I don't really have an answer for you. I can tell you that gall bladder pains are debilitating! Horrible. How much weight have you lost? Usually it's from losing alot of weight (like 75+) in a short span. One test they can do is an ultrasound to look at the gall bladder. Though it can also be problem for those they call the Female, Fat, Forty, Fertile crowd(no weight loss required). I had mine out at 19 after losing over 100 pounds.

I had my gall bladder removed about five years ago after losing 80 pounds in 9 months. The gall bladder attacks felt like I was having a heart attack. The pain was mainly around the middle of my sternum. During attacks I could barely breath because it made the pain worse, and I (who never sweat) had beads of perspiration all over my face.

At first my doctor put me on antacids, which only prolonged the suffering. I just knew it was my gallbladder, so you may want to ask for the ultrasound up front to save yourself from getting the runaround. It got to a point where I could not eat anything with any oil or fat in it without having an attack. However, on the bright side, I was as good as new the day after surgery. Get it checked, and good luck!!

MrsMustang, are you in my head? Lol, I couldn't have written this better! Every bit of what you wrote EXACTLY what I experienced! And no exageration, I thought I was having a heart attack. And for me too, I never had any issues with it again after the surgery.

Hope you get everything figured out and feel better soon!

You have all the symptons I had when they had to take my gall bladder out immediately! I looked online, diagnosed myself, woke my hubby to tell him I was heading to the hospital (at which time he flipped for not waking him as soon as I was in trouble), then he took me to the hospital. They diagnosed the gall bladder immediately and I asked specifically for my lapband surgeon to be called so he could do the surgery (and he did!) He put off his vacation a day so he could do it the next day... My understanding is I lost 70 pounds very quickly and that contributed to the bad gall bladder. Run, don't walk to the ER and get it examined; mine almost exploded!

After the surgery, it took me a little bit of time to get back on track, but I'm there now and almost down another 50! Only 40 something pounds to my goal!!!!

Good luck and take care, let us know what the outcome is!! :o

Oh my goodness! I ended up in the ER on saturday night with what I thought was a heart attack! I had never heard that gallstones could result from weightloss and I've lost over 40lb since mid December (and I'm female and I'm 40). They did multiple tests and determined it was not my heart and told me to follow up with my regular physician which I am doing on Friday morning. It sounds like what I have! I'm so glad you posted this rumar! I hope you are able to find out what is causing your pains too and let us know.

Sounds exactly like my pain before having my gallbladder removed. I lost 125 pounds in 12 months. I had my gallbladder out just shy of the 12 months. So strange to have pain in right shoulder when my band would bring pain to my left shoulder.

Best wishes to you. Let us know how you're doing.

Sue

Want you to know that I am wishing you the best. I have gone through something similar pain wise only in my case, it was due to me pulling muscles in my body from the way I have needed to use more muscles on one side of my body due to my severe osteo arthritis. But I had no idea what it was to begin with and I ended up in the ER one night because the pain was so severe that I was just screaming for them to help me. They ran so many tests on me, including testing for gall bladder problems and it ended up that it was a severe muscle pull. I hope that however it ends up for you, that you get some relief from that pain, I feel for you.

Oh and interestingly, I have an area in my left side where it looks like my stomach is slightly ballooned out. After all the tests were done and came back normal, the consensus was that it is likely fat deposits in there shifting around with the weight loss.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
