I'm only 2 weeks out, but I have good restriction and I am never physically hungry.

When does the swelling from surgery go away? I'm guessing I will be hungry once that happens?

I am surprised to see this post because it is the same questions I have been asking myself lately. I don't know if you are the same as me but I always ate so much that I was never hungry (and rarely full). I have such bad cravings (but not stomach hunger pains) that I would eat constantly. I think that is what they are calling head hunger and I'm getting into threapy for it. But so far I am doing really good with my pre-op diet. I have been writing out my own menu every week before I go shopping and only buy what I need. And space my meals out the way people normally do.

I am 10 1/2 weeks post op and still have not regained hunger. My surgeon said that most people regain theirs about 3 weeks post op. My surgeon is very adamant that you don't eat if you are not hungry, so I asked them what to do about having none. They asked what I am doing now and I told them I only eat once every other, or every couple days. When I eat, I eat a small piece of lean meat and sometimes a veggie. Other than that, I drink a ton of Water, crystal light, and a glass of vanilla soy milk every day. I also take an assortment of Vitamins. The doctor said as long as I have no nutritional issues such as hair falling out, anemia, weakness, or dizziness, then I am ok to continue with my current diet. I know most people disagree with this kind of eating schedule, but I am just sharing my personal experience with you. Good luck and enjoy the no hunger while it lasts, I know I am :)

I actually had this same question a few months ago. So I started asking "normal" (not obese) people how they know when they are hungry. They thought I was nuts! But they all said that they were truely hungry when their stomachs growled. Weird to me because I never really felt that before, I ate because it was time or because I was bored or stressed or happy, well you get it. So now I try to eat only when my stomach growls, or that feeling I get right before it happens. (Unless my head kicks in and I give into headhunger!)

Now, I eat by the clock because I have good restriction and I am only hungry when I first wake up (sometimes). I try not to let 3 or 4 hours go by to keep my metabolism up.

I'm 4 weeks post-op and never hungry. My surgeon said I have to eat 3x daily, even if I have to set an alarm clock to remind me, for nutrition's sake. Sometimes I get so busy I honestly forget, but then I get weak and dizzy, look at the clock and realize that I missed a meal. I did that a couple of times and it was scary so now I make sure I don't forget to eat.

Please be careful so you don't end up like me.

I wasn't eating regularily (because I wasn't hungry at all) and one morning I woke up and walked into the kitchen, got dizzy and then completely passed on the tile kitchen floor. My hubby heard me fall. I ended up spending the day in the ER having CAT scans to make sure I didn't hurt my head in the fall.

That was a real wake-up call. Now I make sure to eat even if it's just a Protein shake.

Per my PA's advice I eat 3 small meals and 3 good Snacks daily. I am hungry often so this isn't an issue. Hopefully I will have my first fill in March.

I have been told to eat 3 small meals and not worry about calories but find its hard to eat so much even though I'm only 12 days post op. I drink a lot of Water but for the past two days have had low energy-sleeping a lot. I have also gotten dizzy while laying down a couple of times. I barely eat 2 cups of food at a time. My urine is light so I think I'm hydrated too. I have been taking (chewing) my flintstone Vitamin but wonder if I'm getting enough carbs for energy. I start back to work full-time tomorrow so I'm worried a little. My boyfriend is diabetic and he checked my blood sugar two hours after I ate a cup of spaghetti and a lite yogurt. It was 86-which I think is low.

This topic - the responses show how different we all are. Wow.

I have been eating by the clock on my workdays, just so I don't get jittery or faint. I don't eat much at those times, just maybe a s/f yogurt or a piece of cheese. My work lunch is a 4oz container of the last night's dinner leftovers. I do feel a litle hunger once in a great while this way- instead of the terrible starving feeling at the beginning. My hunger isn't bad at all now.

Yesterday was a first for me. I felt a little grumble in the morning, ate my litte bitty Breakfast, then a tiny mouthful of a snack while running errands. The only reason I ate dinner was because I don't want my metabolism to drop. I also don't want do to a freak out and scarf food because I feel like my blood sugar is crashing.

So I suppose I should eat when I am hungry, but watch the clock too. Maybe you can find a balance like that as well. It's certainly not easy, is it?

I am 13 months post op and my physical hunger has never returned and I don't believe it will. My surgeon says this is rare but can happen. At first I thought this was an unmitigated benefit. I still think it is a benefit over-all but sometimes I think getting hungry would put me in touch with my body more. I eat three meals and about 2 Snacks a day and I still struggle with head hunger. I think I always will. At least I have a tool to work with now.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
